Skill Level — Easy
The Danube Cycle Path is rated as easy. The path is flat, almost always, directly along the riverbank and very well marked throughout, making it very suitable for families, beginners, or regular cyclists looking to combine easy riding with wonderful scenery. The trail is signposted, wonderfully designed, and very well maintained. Most of the trail is asphalted and the country roads that are included are roads with light traffic. Of course, when entering and exiting towns and cities, you will share the road.
Airport Info
The closest international airport to your tour start in Passau, is Munich (MUC). However closest international airport to the end of your tour, in Vienna, is Vienna International Airport (VIE). If you want to fly into and out of the same airport you can plan for your arrival and departure from Vienna International Airport. Otherwise, you may arrive to Munich, and depart from Vienna. Transfers from Vienna to Passau are available.
Local Travel
From Munich Airport, to arrive to Passau, you must take a bus to Freising train station (approximately €2). It’s also possible to take a taxi from the Airport to Freising Station (approximately €25). From Freising, continue by train to Passau. The train ride is approx. 2 to 2½ hours (depending on connections) and costs €30 to €45 depending on type of train.
At the end of your tour, the Vienna Airport is easily accessible from the main train station by CAT ( city airport train), travel time is 16 minutes. In fact, you can actually check-in for your flight at Vienna Mitte train station.
If you are arriving in Vienna and need to travel to Passau for your tour start, again train travel from the airport to the city center is very convenient and from Wien HBF (main train station) trains to Passau are approximately two hours and 16 minutes travel time.
Climate
The region has a moderate maritime climate, generally experiencing pleasantly mild winters and relatively cool summers. Please check local conditions prior to your departure and remember that your tour will stretch along the Danube from Passau to Vienna so check different locations along the route for a good overall picture. See below for average temperatures and rainfall.
Important to know
Documents
It is each traveler's responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with the country or countries you plan to visit. This includes and is not limited to passport validity, visa requirements and acquisition, blank passport pages required for your destination (s), etc.
US citizens: A good website to research the requirements of the Schengen Agreement and entry into other countries is travel.state.gov.
Non-EU and EU residents: Please research the requirements of your country of residence for international travel and your destination country or countries.
*Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa.Tour Operator
