Reykjanes Peninsula & a visit to the Blue Lagoon
After leaving the capital we head for the Reykjanes peninsula where the Atlantic ridge rises from the ocean. The peninsula is almost completely covered with old lava flows and you will see lava cones and craters of different size and shapes as well the tetonic plates.
We head for the lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the peninsula. This is a magnificent area with rich bird life, and at Eldey Island which is just outside the shore there is one of the world's biggest breeding colony of the Northern Gannet.
You can feel the forces of nature and hear the surf crashing at the beautiful basaltic cliffs. It's simply magical!
We drive to the Blue Lagoon (arrival approx. 11:30) where passengers have three different options; a drop off at the lovely Blue Lagoon, at Keflavik International Airport or heading back to the capital.
A good choice is to visit the Blue Lagoon, which is a unique geothermal spa where guests enjoy relaxing in warm geothermal waters. The lagoon is surrounded by a magical lava field and black sandy beaches. The geothermal seawater is led directly to the Blue Lagoon from wells as deep as 2000 meters/6000 feet and the water stays warm and inviting at 36-39°C/100-110°F throughout the whole year. An indoor Blue Lagoon and geothermal sauna are also on the site. Bathing in this surreal environment is a unique experience no one should miss!
The Lagoon's warm water and natural active ingredients; mineral salts, silica and blue-green algae help you relax and escape the stress and strain of daily life. The Lagoon's white silica mud gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin and has a revitalizing effect while the blue-green algae nourish and soften the skin. The mineral salts of the Lagoon balance and relax body and soul. It is truely a relaxing bath.
