Landmannalaugar & Mt. Hekla
Super Jeep tour to Landmannalaugar - the Pearl of the Highlands
This unique and unforgettable Super Jeep Excursion begins on the main roads half way across the southwestern Lowlands, past the horticultural town of Hveragerdi and the agricultural town of Selfoss, until the first goal of the day, the Ţjorsár Valley, is reached. Then the jeeps gradually approach the realm of the interior, where the landscape turns from green to gray and black.

The mountain route begins after a short refreshment stop at the edge of the central highlands. The route lies across lava fields of different ages, black ash and scoria deserts, past young craters where a few streams and brooks have to be forded. The pearl of the central highlands, Landmannalaugar, and its surroundings are too colorful and magnificent to describe with words. It is situated in a valley between steep mountains, nestling at the high and dark edge of the rhyolite lava field, Laugahraun. Many hot and cold springs mix and create a warm brook, where people bathe and relax. The banks of the brook are boggy and remarkably well vegetated for the elevation and people are kindly asked to stay on the wooden path across the bog to the brook. The use of soap in the brook is forbidden.
The mountains are split with gullies, gorges and canyons.
After a relaxing bath and visit of Landmannalaugar, the tour continues towards west in the direction of the country's most infamous and very active volcano, Hekla. Its frequent eruptions have left thick layers of ash in the landscape where the hardy miniature plants fight for their existence. Its most recent eruption, which started on February 26th, 2000, split the whole volcano open with a 6-7 km long fissure, and as usual, the emission of lava gradually concentrated in one crater - this time in the southeast slopes, producing a lava field of close to 20km˛ four days later and was still going strong. Soon after having passed the pumice mines near the volcano, the main road system takes over and after a short refreshment stop in the horticultural town Hveragerdi, the capital greets us again.
