Þórsmörk & the South Coast
Valley between the Glaciers
We begin this extraordinary tour by driving over the plateau of Hellisheiði through Selfoss, Hella and Hvollsvöllur, where we'll make a short stop to buy food and provisions for lunch. Then, we'll visit the beautiful waterfall Seljalandsfoss, whilst experiencing a walk behind the falls. We continue over the river Steinholtsá and take a walk into the narrow gorge of Stakkholtsgjá, which is an unusual and breathtaking canyon.
Our main attraction on this tour will be the area of Þórsmörk (Thor’s woods), a natural reserve, shielded on three sides by glaciers and mountains and surrounded by natural boundaries like ice caps and glacial rivers. For these reasons, it has also been difficult to reach; limiting access to heavy-duty mountain vehicles. A multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees, create seemingly endless possibilities for enjoying nature, where today more than 170 plant species can be found, plus many different species of moss and lichen.
Þórsmörk is a narrow valley situated between three glaciers: Mýrdalsjökull, Eyafjallajökull and Tindafjallajökull. Þósmörk was a fjord some 12,000 years ago, which your guide will explain. The outlet glaciers tumble and crawl down into the gullies, some of them ending in spectacular glacial lagoons. Their melt-off rivers all have to be crossed on the way into Þórsmörk and sometimes they can be challenging; changing in a matter of a couple of hours from innocent streams to thunderous torrents. Our skilled drivers are highly experienced in coping with the crossing of these rivers. This is truly an unforgettable tour for pure nature lovers and ideal for hikers!
