Snæfellsjökull Volcano
The Center of the Earth
Only about two hours' drive away from the capital on the central western peninsula of Snæfellsnes is a uniquely beautiful area offering many recreational activities, namely Arnarstapi. In the past, this hamlet was more populated during the times of the Danish trade monopoly and primitive fisheries. Nowadays fishermen's families from the Southwest and West mainly use the well-sheltered and small natural harbor during summer, and most of their houses are abandoned during winter.
The French author, Jules Verne, wrote the widely-read adventure novel The Journey to the Centre of the Earth, which has been filmed at least twice. This journey is supposed to have started through the vast and ice-filled crater of the cone-shaped dormant strata volcano Snæfellsjökull. The volcano attracts thousands of people every year. Some of them assemble there regularly every summer to enjoy its energy radiation, as they believe it to be one of the earth's few energy spots.
Nature lovers enjoy the spectacular landscapes and peculiarities of the surroundings and spend time hiking and bird-watching along the precipitous shoreline, both on land and sea. The more adventurous enjoy the thrill of snowmobiling to the highest points of the glacier or boat trips along the rugged coastline, which often bring unexpected surprises. The landscape and lava formations and "The King" himself, as the glacier is called by the locals, supply endless motives for photographers, who cannot avoid participating in some of the above activities to reach the most interesting spots. People relax and enjoy excellent refreshments in the small restaurant of Arnarstapi between the activities. A skilled guide accompanies the visitors to help them enjoy this lifetime experience to the fullest.
