After the disastrous flooding in 1953, the Deltaplan was developed and most tidal outlets were closed from the sea by dams. Most parts of Zeeland were, and still are, under sea level and in 1953 the embankments were too weak and too low, causing this area to be at risk for flooding’s once in every 80 years. Now, because of the flood barriers, that chance is reduced to less than once every 4000 years.Just before reaching our destination of today (Zierikzee, on the island of Schouwen-Duivenland) we will visit the ‘Watersnoodmuseum’. This museum tells the tragic events of 1953 and is built in recently renewed caissons, once used for the last closure gap. This was done in November 1953, ten months after the storm surge which broke through more than 300 embankments. Zierikzee is a beautiful town and the centre of the ‘mussel culture’. The ‘Zeeuwse mosselen’ (blue mussels) are a renowned delicacy.
Day 5: Zierikzee - Delta Works - Middelburg, 32 or 20 mi. (51 or 32 km)

This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers against the sea. When cycling along the embankment, one will realize why this has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges to protect the country now and in the future and to let seawater into the widespread Delta area. It is precisely why the Deltaworks are referred to as the one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. After this dam you will paddle to Middelburg, but not without visiting the picturesque port town of Veere. Middelburg is the lively principal town of Zeeland with many old houses, churches, the beautiful town hall and a pleasant shopping. Also to be found in Middelburg is the Roosevelt Academy, a liberal arts college, located in the former late-gothic town hall on the market of Middelburg.
Day 6: Middleburg - Ghent (Belgium), 30 mi. (45 km)
Today you have to cross the ‘Westerschelde’, the only estuary which isn’t closed by a dam cause it’s the gateway to the port of Antwerp. Today you will cycle along a beautiful route to Schoonhoven, also known as the Silver City, renowned for its talented silversmiths since the 17th century. Your cycling route then leads through the Alblasserwaard region, until you reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight. From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take you and your bicycle in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland.Day 3: Dordrecht - Willemstad | Willemstad - Bergen op Zoom, 26 or 31 mi. (42 or 50 km)
The ship will navigate to Willemstad, as you enjoy your breakfast. Willemstad is a beautiful old fortified town on the Haringvliet waterway and from here, you cycle to Tholen, once an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. Your route continues to Bergen op Zoom, a historic fortified town that once lay on the open waters of the Oosterschelde. Narrow streets, the old town, market, church squares, and idiosyncratic monumental buildings show the history of a rich and eventful past that goes back more than eight hundred years.Day 4: Bergen op Zoom - Kreekrak Lock | Kreekrak Lock - Antwerp, 13 or 21 mi. (21 or 35 km)
Your biking this morning will feature the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” surrounding Bergen op Zoom. In the early afternoon you will once again board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral, and the medieval Steen Castle. Dinner tonight (not included) will be in town in a restaurant of your choice (recommendations available onboard).Day 5: Antwerp - Temse - St. Amands, 21 or 31 mi. (34 or 49 km)
This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your day's destination There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is, without a doubt, one of the natural highlights of the tour.Day 6: St. Amands - Dendermonde | Dendermonde - Ghent, 32 mi. (52 km)
You continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has ensured that it has been a successful trading port. In total, the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches, and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world-famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-meter-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center.Day 7: Ghent - Bruges, 13 or 28 mi. (22 or 45 km)
Your cycling itinerary leads to Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the ‘Venice of the North’ and arguably the most beautiful of all the Flemish cities. Bruges attracts more than two million visitors every year who come to see the picturesque medieval town center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city and a long list of historic attractions. An outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, Bruges has managed to maintain its historic fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic buildings form an integral part of the town’s identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges' many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café. Dinner tonight (not included) will be in town in a restaurant of your choice (recommendations available onboard).Day 8: Bruges
End of your tour. Disembarkation after breakfast by 9:30 am.If you're looking for a different flavor, check out our full list of bike & boat tours or view all our featured trips, specials, and news.

You will cruise through Amsterdam to the point where you will try your bikes and ride to the mooring place.Day 2: Oude Wetering - Gouda, 28 mi. (45 km)
Nice ride in the countryside, various landscapes, scenic cycling through bulb fields. You will cycle through the heart of the bulb fields. Exact route for today depends on which bulbs bloom. Today you will visit the Keukenhof, the very centre of the bulb fields, with a
great variety of bulb flowers. You will have your lunch here and after the Keukenhof, you’ll bike along biking paths and narrow roads. There are several options and directions for a nice bike tour. Stopover in Gouda, one of the cheese cities of Holland.Day 3: Gouda - Dordrecht, 25-31 mi. (40-50 km)
A day in the green heart of Holland, following minor roads along winding waterways. In the morning you are cycling along narrow waterways, in the midst of pastures. We moor in Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. Walking distance from the centre. A (guided) walk in the evening is not to be missed.Day 4: Dordrecht - Zierikzee, 31 mi. (50 km)
To Zierikzee, across and along rivers From Dordrecht you will be on the Feniks until Willemstad, an old fortified city. From there you will bike in the quiet world of the “polders” along pastures and marshy areas. A few villages, polders, and bridges, and then you will arrive in Zierikzee, an ancient harbor but still in use. Before your arrival, you are on the Dutch “Zeeuwse” Islands and visit Oude Tonge and Bruinisse, both fishing villages. Near the coast, you can find the newly expanded Flood-museum, in a special housing: in 4 former caissons, big floating concrete boxes which were used to fill the gaps in the broken dikes.Day 5: Zierikzee - Middelburg/Vlissingen, 34 mi. (55 km)
Today we go from Zierikzee in Zeeland (which actually means “Sealand”) to either Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland or Vlissingen across the biggest island “Walcheren”. Middelburg is a beautiful old city, Vlissingen (in English known as Flushings) is the entrance port of the Westerschelde, the estuary of the river Schelde and the port of Antwerpen.Day 6: Middelburg/Vlissingen - Gent, 25-28 mi. (40-45 km)
Luctor et Emergo, (I struggle and I will get up) is the motto of the Isles of Zeeland. We’ll leave the land that has struggled so long against the force of the sea. Today we head for the waterway Westerschelde, which is the main estuary connecting the port of Antwerp with the sea. We will leave the isles of Zeeland and cross the Westerschelde to the most southern part of Western Holland, Zeeuws Vlaanderen. But first, you’ll do a nice tour along winding (inner)dykes with trees on top in a very scenic landscape. After crossing the Westerschelde by boat you either cycle or sail to the city of Gent. It had its economic peak later than Bruges. It has a cozy, thriving town centre with squares with interesting buildings, amongst which are the castle ‘Gravensteen’, churches, and St. Baafs cathedral. We will moor in Gent. Of course, an evening walk in town belongs to the possibilities.Day 7: Gent - Bruges, 22-37 mi. (35-60 km)
Two medieval cities: from Gent to Bruges. Today you cycle from one medieval city to another. You can stay aboard the Feniks and start biking from midway or cycle the whole trip. It’s worthwhile to make a visit the town centre before the ride to Bruges if you didn’t have the time for that yesterday. Between the two towns you will cycle on quiet roads in the typical small-scale fields pattern of Flanders with farmhouses and small villages.Day 8: Bruges, end of tour
After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye.Standard Class

Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam | Amsterdam - Oude Wetering, 6.1 mi. (10 km)
The mooring place of the barge in Amsterdam is Oosterdok, (near the Science Center: ‘Nemo’, Oosterdok 2).Once you arrive onboard the boat, you can put your luggage away in your cabin and then enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. It is also a good moment to become acquainted with the guide, skipper and crew, and of course your fellow passengers. You are expected to arrive at the barge on Saturday at the latest at 2 PM. The barge needs to leave the mooring place in Amsterdam at 2:15 pm to cruise to Oude Wetering. It is very important you are on time. The barge can’t wait due the opening hours of bridges and/or locks.
Day 2: Oude Wetering - Gouda, 27 mi. (45 km)
From Oude Wetering you will continue your tour over country roads along river banks and channels through the Green Heart to the city known for its cheese, Gouda! Not only is Gouda famous for its cheese, but also its pipes, ‘stroopwafels’ (treacle-waffle), pottery, stained-glass windows, a fairy-like town hall, and atmospheric canals. Gouda is a beautiful Old-Dutch city with a mostly intact city center. After dinner, you can take a walk through the city.Day 3: Gouda - Alblasserdam | ferry to Dordrecht, 25 mi. (40 km)
From Gouda, you will cycle over quiet country roads and narrow cycling paths to Dordrecht. You ride past scenic polders and through the deepest lying polder of the Netherlands, Krimpenerwaard. After arriving at the dyke, you cross the Lek River by ferry to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The windmills at Kinderdijk were still actively used until 1950. These days, a large pumping station is responsible for controlling the water level in the polder. You have the opportunity to visit the interior of a windmill. An impressive piece of centuries-old technique that is still functional today. After a beautiful tour through the Alblasserwaardpolder, you arrive at Alblasserdam. A modern, fast ferry will transport you to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities of the country, situated at a busy crossing of waterways. Dordrecht is also the birthplace of the independence of the Netherlands where in 1572 the first free State assembly was held.Day 4: Dordrecht - Willemstad | Bruinisse - Zierikzee, 32 mi. (54 km)
From Dordrecht, you navigate to the Delta area of the Dutch greater rivers during breakfast. Years ago, an open connection existed with the sea due to the many tributaries in this area. After the disastrous flooding in 1953, the Delta plan was developed and most tidal outlets were closed from the sea by dams. Most parts of Zeeland were, and still are, under sea level and in 1953 the embankments were too weak and too low, causing this area to be at risk for flooding once every 80 years. Now, because of the flood barriers, that chance is reduced to less than once every 4000 years.Just before reaching the day's destination (Zierikzee, on the island of Schouwen-Duivenland) you visit the ‘Watersnoodmuseum’. This museum tells the tragic events of 1953. Zierikzee is a beautiful town and the center of the ‘mussel culture’. The ‘Zeeuwse mosselen’ (blue mussels) are a renowned delicacy.
Day 5: Zierikzee - Delta Works - Middelburg, 32 mi. (51 km)
This morning you cycle along the Oosterschelde towards the North Sea, to cross the Oosterscheldedam. The enormous locks are built in this embankment and can be closed during storms and high tides protecting the southwest of the Netherlands against the sea. This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers against the sea. When cycling along the embankment, one will realize why this has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges to protect the country now and in the future and let seawater into the widespread Delta area. It is precisely why the Deltaworks are referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. After this dam, you bike to Middelburg via the picturesque port town of Veere. Middelburg is the lively principal town of Zeeland with many old houses, churches, a beautiful town hall, and pleasant shopping. Also to be found in Middelburg is the Roosevelt Academy, a liberal arts college, located in the former late-gothic town hall on the market of Middelburg.
Day 6: Middleburg - Breskens | Breskens - Sas van Gent | Sas van Gent - Ghent (Belgium), 30 mi. (45 km)
Today you have to cross the ‘Westerschelde’, the only estuary which isn’t closed by a dam as it is the gateway to the port of Antwerp. A short ferry trip brings you from Vlissingen to Breskens in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Dutch-Flanders)! You are getting close to Belgium. On your daily cycle route, you will cross the Dutch – Belgium border back and forth before you definitely cross the Dutch – Belgium border by boat to sail to Ghent.Day 7: Ghent - Bruges, 27 mi. (45 km)
This morning you will cycle through Ghent to the scenic countryside of Oost-Vlaanderen (East-Flanders), characterized by forests, fields, small villages, and castles. From the Aalterbrug, the last part of this route leads over the former towpath along the canal of Oostende-Gent, the oldest canal of Belgium, to Bruges. The impressive city of Bruges is the end destination of this bike and barge trip. Why not spend another day or two?Day 8: Bruges, disembark by 10 AM. The boat will be moored near the Bargeweg, approx. 950 meters from train station

From Bruges, the train to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport takes approx. 3¼ hr and costs approximately ± €48.
Climate
Please check local conditions before travel. There are many good websites to use to research regional weather including average high/low temperatures, average rainfall, and more weather-related facts. The climate in Holland is considered maritime, greatly affected by the sea. Belgium as well is influenced by the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, with cool summers and moderate winters. Please see below for monthly weather averages.
Day of Rest
You can always stay on board ship and sail to the next stop.
Recommended
Even though Wifi may be included on your specific boat, or even if it is available with a surcharge, the strength and speed may not be what you are accustomed to. Due to the steel construction of the ships and barges, signal strength and speed can be affected. If you are dependent on high speed internet while you travel, we suggest that you rent a reliable personal hot spot
Remarks
On all the Magnifiques, as well as the Zwaantje, De Holland, Fluvius, and Lena Maria you will be provided with information regarding the Ride with GPS (RWGPS) app which provides a way to download tour maps and daily routes to your smartphone for free. The app provides you with clear GPS tracks with voice navigation, which can be used offline. You will receive detailed instructions in your final travel information. Be sure to download the app and upload the tour information before your arrival!
Important to know
Travel Documents
Before you travel, please check the passport and visa requirements of the country/countries you plan to visit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have proper identification. For US citizens, the U.S. Passports & International Travel website is a good source of information. The Country Information tab provides details about passport validity, blank passport pages required, etc.
*Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa.
Extra Stay
Be sure to set aside some time in Amsterdam to visit the world-renowned museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House, and in Bruges to visit the Groeninge Museum which includes paintings by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Rogier van der Weyden, and others. May we suggest Booking.com for researching and reserving your extra nights? You can read a detailed description of hotels, a clear listing of amenities, and see customer reviews and ratings.
