German Baltic Sea

Germany, Denmark Bike + Boat Tour

Windmills, mansions and fairy tales

Sailing and cycling, you embark on a journey through time. Prehistoric sepulchers and megalithic graves tell about people's lifes 6000 years ago. Everywhere, you see the imprints the Vikings left on the region. In the early Middle Ages, they were in control of a great part of Denmark and the Baltic Sea.

Aboard Captain Klaas' Flying Dutchman or aboard the three mast barque, Artemis, you sail and cycle wherever the wind takes you. Your destinations are fixed, the islands of the Danish South Funen Archipelago and German coast of the Baltic Sea between Kiel and Maasholm, but the journey is determined by weather conditions and the wind so each departure will be unique and your itinerary will vary. This is a tour in which you are encouraged, though never required to take an active part in the experience, be it hoisting the sails or helping to prepare a meal.

On most of the islands of Ærø; Langeland, , Funen, Alsen and possbily Lolland as well as on the North German Schleifjord or along the Kiel canal, you undertake 6 cycling tours in a diverse landscape. Beside beautiful mansions, neat villages and reed roofed farmhouses,  the terrain ranges from flat to rolling. Along the route, prehistoric sepulchral await exploration and the wild horse on the Langeland gallop alongside. Cycle through the world of fairy-tales that inspired Hans Christian Andersen and of course feed both body AND soul with the world famous Danish wafers.

When reserving this tour, please keep in mind that this is a tour where  the distances between the islands is covered under sails as often as possible.  It is necessary to make more allowances for the prevailing wind and weather conditions.

Day-To-Day Itinerary

German Baltic Sea Map

The planned itinerary is subject to change due to changing wind and weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances having to do with mooring requirements, etc.

Possible itinerary based on weather conditions:

First Morning:
During breakfast the captain and the tour guide assess the wind and weather and determine the day's itinerary.  Will the day begin  with a cycling tour, e.g. along the Kiel Canal, or with setting sails to Damp? Perhaps there is a more favorable wind to the Isle of Ærø where, upon  arrival,  there will be plenty of time for an eventful cycling tour? Thus, the first stage could be by bike or boat.

Life on Board:
On board  the lessons abound on sailing. After a  short nautical introduction,  a member of the crew will explain the particular sails and acquaint you with their names. It won't take long to learn that the "Fall" (naut.: jeer) is a rope with which a sail is set or struck and a "Schot" (naut.: sheet) is a rope which is used to operate particular sails. There is then opportunity for all to hoist the  sails.  Once the engine is switched off,  the feeling of the ship as it depends on the wind,  as well as the spray and the waves whipping over the deck, will be unforgettable.

Bike tours:
The cycling itinerary  leads to the most beautiful places and most memorable sights of the area around the harbors anchored in. The enchanting  town of Ærøskøbing  - also know as  the "place of fairy tales" -  counts among potential highlights of the  journey as well as the visit of Kappeln, Faaborg, or Sønderborg.
If there are favorable winds "Valdemars Slot" and the mansion "Holstenshuus", two of the large estates, also visited by the famous poet Hans-Christian Andersen, will enrich the program. Whether you see the wild horses on the isle of Langeland, the steep cliffs on Ærø, the end-less poppy and marguerite meadows or the enchanted wood "Pipstorn" on Funen, again and again nature provides surprising perspectives and the most spectacular views.
