Day 1: Arrival in Venice
Individual arrival. The city of Venice has a well-organized and easily accessible public transport system that invites you to explore this exquisite city. Famous sights can be visited such as the Saint Mark’s Basilica or the Rialto Bridge.
Day 2: Venice – Jesolo, 22 miles (35 km)
The day’s cycling tour follows the endless beaches of Litorale di Cavallino, lined with fishing boats and souvenir stalls. Before leaving Venice, there will be a short excursion to the lighthouse at the outmost end of the island for a final glimpse of the lagoon city and surrounding islands. On the way to Jesolo, one can hardly resist the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the cool, crisp waters. The night will be spent in Jesolo or a seaside resort on the Adriatic.
Day 3: Jesolo – Portogruaro – Lignano, 31 miles (50 km)
Passing the last of the fishermen’s cottages, you will reach Caorle, a wonderfully small seaside resort with an enchanting historical city center. Intriguing sights such as the Cathedral of St. Stephen, built in the stunning Romanesque style, and the Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Angel located on a little promontory on the sea, are well worth a visit. The day’s destination, Lignano, is a beautiful and quaint village. The mooring complex here is the largest in Italy and among the largest in all of Europe, boasting more than 5,000 berths. One of the most important monuments of the city is the Terrazza a Mare, or the Terrace on the Sea. Constructed by Aldo Bernardis, it is an interesting mix of youthful liveliness and relaxing wellbeing.
Day 4: Lignano – Grado, 30 miles (48 km)
Besides the beaches of the Adriatic, there is plenty still left to discover: ruins of former Roman cities, ancient churches, and lonely landscapes at the edge of the lagoon.
The tour continues comfortably en route to Grado. Excavations of the once large Roman city can be seen in the open-air-site and two museums in the town of Aquileia. The National Archaeological Museum (one of the most important museums of Ancient Rome in the world) contains over 2,000 inscriptions, statues and other antiquities. The site of Aquileia, believed to be the largest Roman city yet to be excavated, is desribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The day's destination of Grado, also called the "Sunny Island", is a fishing center famous for its uncontaminated nature.
Day 5: Grado – Monfalcone, 25 miles (40 km)
From Grado, the cycle tour leads through the unique natural landscapes of the River Isonzo. The reserve is a very diverse environment with fresh water swamps, reed thickets, and a watery meadow. Isonzo was also the site of a series of twelve battles between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies in World War I. After this natural paradise, you will come upon Monfalcone. Also an important WWI sight, there is a park dedicated to its remembrance.
Day 6: Monfalcone – Trieste, 15 miles (25 km)
Today’s stage winds through the surroundings of Trieste, a wild landscape of rocky caverns leading back to the sea and a coastline of unique beauty. Here, the elevated plateaus plunge into the deep blue water and the white precipices stand upright, jutting towards the heavens. Coastal roads follow through resorts like Duino, Sistiana, Miramare, and Barcola. The romantic castle of Miramare can be visited along the way. It is situated above the Bay of Grignano in the middle of a beautiful park home to more then 2,000 plants. High above the Gulf of Trieste is a city of the same name, once a harbor metropolis of the Habsbrugs Emire, where the night will be spent.
Day 7: Trieste – Portoro/Piran – Trieste, 19 miles (30 km)
A short cycle tour today takes you out of Italy and into Slovenia. The route follows predominately on cycle paths through well known seaside resorts like Koper and Izola to Piran, or to Portoro; a spa resort of the Slovenian Riviera.
Day 8: Departure
Debarkation after breakfast.
