Belgium Ardenne
Belgium Bike Tour
The Ardennes, situated in the south-east of Belgium, is one of nature's unspoiled areas, rich in fauna and flora, with vast forests of broad leaf and fir, hills and fast flowing rivers. Visitors can wander through the many picturesque villages nestled in the valleys where traditions and folklore still live on and where the region's arts and crafts can be enjoyed. One such village is La Roche - en - Ardenne, found deep in the forest. Already settled in the neolithic period, it served as a Celtic, than Roman stronghold. The medieval castle was built in the 9th century by Rupes Seremani, a vassal of the Duke of Lotharingia. You can also visit the Neo-Gothic church of St. Nicholas which houses beautiful Baroque sculptures, 17th century paintings and tombs, a 16th century baptismal font and the remains of ancient sculptures. People also call this town the “Pearl of the Ardennes.” It does lie like a pearl in the twist of the Ourthe amidst the hills of the Ardennes. Deeply in love with the beautiful Mathilde, the Dutch poet Jacques Perk immortalized the small town in a sonnet in 1879. The author is honored by a statue on the Rue de Trouvere.

Day-To-Day Itinerary
Cyclist can choose among four different itineraries:
- Hotton: 18 miles/ 29 km
A short but snappy ride along the shores of the Ourthe. From the hotel you climb into the hills to the town of Melines, a farming village at a crossing of old roads. Just over a hill is where the Caves of Hotton are located. Your descent will bring you to this strategically located town. During the Ardennes offensive of 1944, Hotton was an important place because of its location on the Ourthe River. The British war cemetery along your route bears testimony to this. The return route is along the Ourthe River and the " Caves of 1001 Nights”. The mysterious lighting within emphasizes the various colors and formations. It is really an incredible sight. You can combine this round trip with route 4 for a complete day trip. - Marche-en-Famenne: 36 miles/58 km
The route passes through Ronzon, over a forested hill to the town of Rendeux-Bas, a little town with a 17th century look and a wonderful castle (hotel-restaurant). Near Hampteau you will cycle away from the Ourthe River to end up in a tranquil landscape. Via little villages you cycle to Marche-en-Famenne.This town is called the “City of the Golden Fleece”. In the old watch tower is a lace museum. Crossing the valleys of the Wamme and Hedree streams, you cycle back to the Ourthe. - Durbuy: 33 or 40 miles/53 or 63 km.
Today is a hilly ride to Durbuy “the smallest city of the world”. At first you cycle to the plain of the Oppagne and Wéris, where people already lived during the stone age. Menhirs and Dolms are the evidence. These are fascinating historical structures. Durbuy is located in a bowl alongside the Ourthe and makes a nice Sunday get-away for a lot of Belgiums . Here you can stroll along the quais and explore the narrow streets. On the return route you cross the plain of the Wéris again and will have to conquer the “Col de Rideux” near Heyd. It is downhill after that through the valley of the Aisne, in the direction of Marcourt. - La Roche 12 miles/ 20 km.
When you stay in Marcourt, you cannot miss the nearby town of La Roche. In the beginning of the ride you climb out of the valley of the Ourthe to enter the town after passing through Cielle. Here you can visit the castle ruin and the army museum with relics from WW II. After a lunch at one of the terraces you cycle back to Marcourt. You can combine this ride with ride 1 to make it a full day.
