Golden Circle Classic
Gullfoss - Geysir - Nesjavellir - Þingvellir
This excursion offers some of Iceland's most famous natural phenomena. First, we'll visit the geothermal high temperature region of Nesjavellir, situated among the picturesque landscapes of Lake þingvallavatn, which supplies Iceland's capital area with about 25% of the hot water required for central heating. A few kilometers to the north, we will go for a walk in Þingvellir National Park, where highly interesting geological formations can be seen (including a fault line!) as well as the most significant historical site of the country: its ancient parliament, Alþingi. We'll continue on towards the impressively powerful Gullfoss waterfall and the bubbling geysers at Geysir. Next, a visit to the Church of the ancient Icelandic bishops, Skálholt, will reveal a part of Iceland's religious past. This tour will also take us through fertile agricultural regions as well as to the crater lake of Kerið. We'll also visit the greenhouse community Hveragerði, where the geothermal energy has been harnessed to grow vegetables and other exotic plants, and we'll see the endless possibilities of this natural resource. A short drive later and we'll be back in Reykjavík.
