Loire Valley II: Tours to Angers

France Bike Tour

The three Loire Valley tours from Orléans to Tours, Tours to Angers and Angers to Le Croisic can be taken individually or one after the other. Starting in Orléans, the routes travel west all the way to Le Croisic on the Atlantic Ocean. The Orléans to Tours route includes the historic town of Orléans, the flowered city of Beaugency, the Château of Chambord (see Château Country tour), the Château of Blois, the Château of Chaumont, and ‘Clos Luce.’ Tours to Angers route includes Villandry with its famous gardens, a Renaissance château in Azay Le Rideau, a 15th château in Langeais, the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ château in Ussé, the abbey of Fontevraud, the vineyards of Anjou, and the château in Angers. Angers to Le Croisic route includes the vineyards at Anjou, the rivers Loire and Layon, Champtoceaux in its magnificent setting, Nantes, and the beaches of St. Brévin and Le Croisic.

Loire Valley II: Tours to Angers Map
  1. Arrival in Tours.
  2. Tours - Azay le Rideau, 23 mi. (36 km)
  3. Azay le Rideau - Chinon, 24 mi. (39 km)
  4. Chinon - Saumur, 27 mi. (43 km)
  5. Saumur - Angers, 40 mi. (64 km)
  6. Departure from Angers.

Day 1: Arrival in Tours

Day 2: Tours – Azay le Rideau, 40 km or 25 mi.
As you leave Tours behind, you come upon Savonniéres, an incredibly picturesque town surrounded by beautiful nature. You proceed to Villandry famous for it's chateau and it's matchless gardens. Saché also awaits you, the home of the famous novelist Honoré de Balzac. Finally arrive in Azay le Rideau where you can admire its Renaissance chateau, a jewel set over the Indre river.

Day 3: Azay le Rideau – Chinon, 33 km or 21 mi.
The final destination of todays biking is Chinon but first we must head towards Langeais to admire the 15th century château. Offering a typical form of a medieval fortified castle, here you can admire the wonderful tapestries and furniture from the era in which it was built. Ride on towards the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ chateau in Ussé which has inspired Perrault for its famous fairy tail story.

Day 4: Chinon – Saumur, 40 km or 25 mi.
Before leaving the medieval city of Chinon, founded on the Vienne river, there is time to visit the numerous cellars which propose the famous red wine such appreciated by Rabelais. Then, continue towards the abbey of Fontevraud, the largest monastic city remaining in Europe which is the necropolis of the Plantagenêts sovereigns. You will end the day in the lovely town of Saumur.

Day 5: Saumur – Angers, 60 km or 38 mi.
The adventure continues following the Loire river before going through the vineyards of Anjou. You will reach the peaceful city of Angers and its chateau sheltering the famous Apocalypse Tapestry.

Day 6: Departure.
