Overview
Get ready for an adventure, in fact, get ready for several adventures all wrapped up in one tour!
Be the master of your own dog sled team, driving through the Norwegian wilderness, take a ferry ride over Lake Fermunden, Norway's second largest lake to arrive at Fermundsmarka National Park to hike through this paradise for falcons and reindeer, enjoy fishing and boating on Lake Malmagen in Sweden.
You will also have the opportunity to kayak, hike, go horseback riding or even play golf. Not to mention, your accommodations will even allow you to pamper yourself. How about a spa experience complete with treatments that use herbs, snow, lava stones, and seaweed?
The mountain settlement of Røros is a perfect setting for the starting point of this unique tour. Rich in tradition, full of character and charm, as you stroll the streets, you will sense that 'history whispers', as the author Johan Falkberget wrote. In the streets, you will find a lively artistic community, shops full of character, and excellent restaurants that offer local dishes made from the season's produce. A backdrop of pristine nature frames this cultural and historical tradition in a way that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
Your accommodations in Norway are either in the Røros Hotel, a modern, comfortable hotel complete with swimming pool and sauna, the perfect starting point for your active vacation experience or you could decide to stay in the Vertshuset, right in the middle of town.
This tour provides the option for a 5 day/4 night stay in which you will remain in Norway. The 8 day/7 night option allows for the adventure to extend into Sweden. You will not want to miss out on this!
From Røros, you will cycle to cross into Sweden, one of the largest countries in Europe, with great diversity in its nature and climate. Here, the Fjällnäs, Sweden’s oldest mountain hotel, will be your exclusive sanctuary where you can experience the continual, dramatic changes of nature.Itinerary
Options for daily itineraries:
1. Easy route following the Glomma River downstream, passing a small canyon and passing through the village of Galåen. A visit to the Galaavolden Gård, a natural farm, and dairy is on the agenda. The return path is along a different route through a forest.
2. This itinerary takes you to Lake Femund, Norway’s 3rd largest lake, 662 meters above sea level, with spectacular scenery featuring virgin forest, mountain expanses, fishing lakes, rivers, and streams. There is plenty of countryside with little or no tourist traffic. You will board the ferry, the Fæmund II, in Synnervikea to cross the lake. Departure is at 9 in the morning and return is at 4 pm. The Femundsmarka National Park was founded in 1971 and is located between Lake Femund and the Swedish border. lt is a wildlife reserve with pine forests with large boulders, bare mountain ranges, and many rivers and lakes, making it fascinating for hikers and anglers. Because of its unspoiled rivers and lakes, it is also of great scientific value. There are no roads leading to the National Park and it can only be reached by ferry or on foot.
3. "Cycle through history", following the Gruveturen. Note how the landscape has changed in the last centuries. You will see fascinating abandoned mines. This is a 34-mile tour that will take you through extensive forests and copper-colored landscapes, along Aursunden Lake. Molinga nature reserve stretches out from the north-western end of the lake and it is an important nesting and resting area for birds. It is one of the wetlands in the Røros region with the richest variety of species during migration. Cycling over gravel roads, passing through a small village, you finally descend into the beautiful Rødalen valley back to Røros.
4. An easy cycling and hiking experience to the Olavsgruva mine to explore this World Heritage site, a complex of old mining buildings that still stand.
5. This itinerary provides a special treat. You will cycle in the morning through an agricultural landscape on a dirt path. Midway, the route turns to follow the Nøra River upstream. A gravel road will lead to the farm home of Ketil, proprietor of Alaskan Husky Tours. Here you will actually get to drive your own dog sled!
6. A day of shopping! This day in Røros can also be reserved for a visit to the museum, a tour over the Slegghaugen, and of course a visit to one of the most famous places in Norway, Sleggveien, or Pippi Longstocking street.
Below are suggestions if you extend your tour into Sweden:
7. This option is reserved for the day you will cycle to Sweden. The road ascends, slowly and steadily, until you arrive at Lake Malmagen and the beautiful hotel complex, Fjällnäs. It is a 31-mile day. Once you cross the border in Sweden, there is an entirely different landscape. You enter the terrain of the reindeer. The Fjällnäs Hotel includes a Fanny Sachs-designed spa with treatments that use herbs, snow, lava stones, and seaweed.
8. Take advantage of the spa and opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. Lake Malmagen is also well known for its excellent fishing. Equipment is available at the hotel.
9. 15 miles from the hotel is the skiing resort Funäsdalen with a very active summer program that includes climbing, downhill cycling, kayaking, walking tours (which can actually begin at the hotel), or golfing.
