Overview
This self-guided bike tour in Germany follows the Main River on a beautiful signposted path through the ever-changing countryside of the Franconian and Hessen regions, passing many historic towns and villages
The adventure begins in Nuremberg (Nürnberg), the “tiny town of cloth and wood”, renowned for its Gothic architecture, old gabled houses and medieval flair. Large town walls complete with 80 towers encircle the historic town, whose locals take great pride in their famous sausages!
The route will continue along the Rhine-Main-Danube canal through idyllic vineyards and various small villages with traditional half-timbered houses.
Your tour will end in Würzburg, Germany’s Baroque city, and the start of the famous Romantic Road bike tour.

Individual arrival in Bamberg. The historical town center has been UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.Day 2: Bamberg - Haßfurt, 23 mi. (37 km)
Today’s tour is short, so you can spend the morning sightseeing in Bamberg. The former fishing quarter, also known as Little Venice, and the picturesque Bridge Town Hall are two of the most interesting sights of the city. On today’s bike tour, you leave the “Franconian Beer Region” and cross to the “Weinfränkische”, the Wine Region. Beside the shores of the Main, you bike to the quiet town of Haßfurt, where you spend the night. The Town’s Church has interesting figurines by Tilman Riemenschneider.Day 3: Haßfurt - Volkach, 33 mi. (54 km)
Your first stop today is Schweinfurt. You continue your journey to a natural highlight: the Volkach Main Loop. The famous wine town Volkach is located at the “tip” of the river loop and a great example of the typical Franconian joie de vivre. It is also the center of the wine-, fruit-and asparagus region. The rectangular market square with its typical Franconian Renaissance Town Hall and the stepped gable is well worth a visit. You spend the night in Volkach.Day 4: Volkach - Würzburg, 40 mi. (65 km)
Today you get to explore the heart of Franconian Wine Country. In the morning you make your way to the lively town of Kitzingen. Until the beginning of the century, Kitzingen’s main source of income was wine-growing and wine trade. Kitzingen is still home to Germany’s oldest wine cellar. Another highlight of today’s tour is the historical town of Marktbreit. Its pretty alleys and impressive townhouses make Marktbreit one of the most beautiful little cities of the region. Afterward, you reach Würzburg. Enjoy the sights of Würzburgon a city tour(included). The view over the town from Marienberg Fortress or Steinburg, the impressive pilgrimage church “Käppele”, the Residenz with its beautiful park, the Old Main Bridge –these are just some of the attractions that make Würzburg unforgettable. Make sure that you don’t miss the old fishing quarter with its many narrow alleys and pretty houses.Day 5: Individual departure

Easy self-guided hotel tour with daily distances of between 14 to 40 miles with most distances being variable. The tour runs at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for sightseeing. The river Main cycle route is excellently signed and runs mainly on cycle paths or quiet paths free of traffic or country roads with little traffic to the river, without any significant ascents.
