In the northeast corner of Spain, next to the border with France, the Catalonian province of Girona encompasses a rugged and beautiful stretch of the Costa Brava, the inland plains of the Empordà and the western section of the Pyrenean mountain range. The countryside throughout inland Girona is stunning.  The climate is excellent for crop growing as the ground is fertile. You’ll see fields of fruit, vegetables and sunflowers and lots of wooded areas.

This road bike option of Girona Countryside is a tour of medium difficulty with daily rides of between 31 and 50 mi. (50 and 80km)  and some climbs of up to 1969' (600m) altitude. This tour is suited for riders who desire to tour on a road bike but who also like a more relaxed itinerary and  to enjoy the surroundings.

During the tour riders will stay in a variety of hand-picked accommodations riding from hotel to hotel.

DAY 1: Arrival in Girona
Today you will have a welcome meeting and bike fitting.

DAY 2: Girona - Monells, 53 mi. (85 km)
This first day on the bike takes riders over the famous mountain of Els Angels at 1588' (484 m) altitude before descending into La Bisbal d'Empordá, the county capital. With only one big climb and descent, this day is an easy day to acclimate yourself to the bike and to the terrain. You can relax and sleep in this morning, no need to rush. Els Angels monastery is a 15th century mountain top retreat loved by riders from all over the world but perhaps most famous for being the location of Salvador Dali's wedding in 1958 to his wife Gala. it is one of the most famous road bike hills in Spain. You will stay this evening in either a fabulous restored 14th century hospital in Monells or a cozy hotel and restaurant next to the old town in the region's capital, depending on what level of accommodations you choose.

DAY 3: Monells - Sant Marti d'Empuries, 28 mi. (45 km)
Your second day on the bike has you cycling north through rolling hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards visiting the walled village of Verges and the hilltop hamlet of Sant Iscle d' Empordá. It is a stunning ride on quiet country roads with no long climbs but a few small hills. You will stay in either a sea front hotel located only about 10 m from its own secluded beach or in a typical Catalan town hostel in this tiny cliff top village.

DAY 4: Sant Marti d'Empúries - Calella de Palafrugell, 28 mi. (45 km)
The route today leads south along the coast before cutting in land and crossing the Les Gavarres mountains' southernmost tip, a diverse ride on mountain roads with plenty of serpentine twists and turns. You will cross the rice growing area surrounding the historic village of Pals, a  famous medieval town. As well as views of the coastline and mountains, Pals has cobbled streets and ancient village walls and archways The Gothic Quarter of the town has been substantially restored and the  cobbled streets are graced with semicircular arches, façades with pointed arched windows and stone balconies. The town wall contains four square towers which date from the 4th century. The climb over the mountains to the Costa Brava seaside town of Calonge awaits followed by a ride along the coast to the village of Calella de Palafrugell.

DAY 5: Calella de Palafrugell - Llagostera,  34 mi. (55 km)
Today's ride Is the toughest of the week running south again following the Costa Brava, through the fishing village of Sant Feliu de Guixols and passing over the renowned Sant Grau pass at  1967'. It is one of the most difficult climbs in the area and part of the route of the Girona to Barcelona stage of the 2009 Tour de France. Descent will be directly into the

DAY 6: Llagostera - Girona, 50 mi. (80 km)
The route today returns you the the city of Girona on a mainly flat route with a few small rolling hills to be crossed towards the end of the day. The scenery begins to change as you get closer to Girona and the Pyranean mountains. You will pass the village of Cassá de la Selva and finally Bonmatí en route to Girona.
