From romantic rural landscapes and rustic farming villages to bustling town centers and gastronomic delights, the Flemish countryside has much to offer! The gently rolling hills make for relatively easy cycling from one town to the next, and allow plenty of time for sightseeing, such as in the Flemish capital of Bruges, whose many waterways make it reminiscent of Venice. Bruges is small in size, but vast in artistic and architectural wonders, many of which date back to the Middle Ages. From its winding cobblestone streets and meandering canals, one can almost always see the medieval Belfort gallantly towering in the heart of the city. This 272-foot high belfry with a 47-bell carillon offers breathtaking views overlooking the city and famous square as well as the many diverse, colorful gables for which it is so well known. The large Markt is surrounded by lively outdoor cafés, and nearby is the Church of Notre-Dame, famous for housing Michelangelo's marble Madonna and Child statue.
Following Bruges will be the artist’s village of Damme, and also a roundtrip trek to Ostend, where one finds an inviting beach along with an esplanade containing the Thermae Palace. Heading further along the North Sea will be the plush coastal town of Knokke, which is famous for its beaches and elaborate squares surrounded by cute boutiques. Not far from Knokke through golden dunes is the nature-reserve of Het Zwin that contains many different kinds of salt-resistant flora (e.g. sea-lavender) for which it is well-known along with its white storks! And of course, not to be forgotten is the fine Flemish fare: from endive wrapped in slices of ham to succulent mussels and a wide assortment of cheeses and chocolates, not to mention over 300 different kinds of beer to wash it all down with!
