| Description: |
The province of Overijsse, the area of this tour, is one of expansive blue skies, lush green forests, towering castles and traditional manor houses. Its highly diverse landscape has earned it the nickname Little Holland. The many great old Saxon farmsteads to be found in this region are worthy of a bike tour. With their striking architectural forms, these farmsteads are an attractive asset to their idyllic surroundings.
The farmstead of Het Twickel, for instance, was built in 1347 and has a current form dating back to 1551. Its breathtaking gardens alone are worth seeing. The tour also runs a stretch through Twenteland Sagenland, where many sagas and legends of witches, giants, phantoms and other strange creatures originated. Along the route, you'll pass by princely castles, interesting windmills and cozy villages with outdoor cafés perfect for indulging in some traditional Dutch koffie met gebak (coffee with cake).
On quiet country roads and bike paths, you will cycle along the German border, through the scenic river valley of the Dinkel and past the Benedictine Abbey from 1150. Some attractions along the way include the Palthehuis museum, the Plechelmusbasiliek and the impressive recreational park Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal, and the Natua Docet museum in Denekamp. Denekamp's lovely surrounding countryside was where many Dutch noblemen choose to settle. One of the fine country homes they built was Singraven Castle. This is also where you will find Holland's biggest double windmill built in 1448, and considered to be a miracle in engineering. Also on your route, Ootmarsum is known as the artist's village due to its many great galleries, paintings and sculptures.
