Germany Bike + Barge Tours

Bike and Barge tour along the Rhine River

This bike and boat tour in Germany follows the Rhine River upstream passing the great cities of Bonn, Koblenz, and Mainz, and ending in Frankfurt. The Rhine is over 800 miles long, but on this adventure, you will cruise the most interesting and powerful stretch.

The Rhine River Valley is dramatic. The landscape consists of cliffs, creeping vineyards, and medieval castles, some in ruins. Half timererd villages dot the landscape. History flows as powerfully as the river current here but myths and legends do as well, such as the story of the Lorelei. The Loreley is a rock on the eastern bank, which soars some 120 metres above the waterline. Legend tells of the the maiden, Loreley, a siren who flirted and sang her distracting song from this rock and seduced sailors into shipwrecks.

UNESCO has recognised the importance of the region by designating the Upper Middle Rhine Valley a World Heritage area.

DAY 1: Arrival in Cologne
Your bike and barge tour begins in Cologne with embarkation at 4 pm. The crew will welcome you on board and while you enjoy a welcome drink you will get information about the ship, the tours and the bicycles. After dinner there is time for a stroll through Cologne. Here the cathedral's spires tower over Germany's oldest city and its innumerable cultural and historical treasures, world-famous museums and active art scene. People meet here for a Kölsch, a chat or simply a laugh. Life in Cologne is uncomplicated and vivacious.

DAY 2: Cologne - Bonn - Andernach, 25 mi. (40 km)
Enjoy breakfast as the boat takes you to Bonn, Germany's ex capital, an internationally renowed hub of commerce and culture. From Bonn, by bike, you pedal along the Rhine River to Andernach.

DAY 3: Andernach – Koblenz, 26 mi. (42 km)
From Andernach, the route leads on the Rhine bike path, passing Remagen, where you can visit the sites of the bridge. Your bike tour ends in Koblenz, a charming city on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Earlier in the afternoon you may want to visit the fortress Ehrenbreitstein or just stroll along the streets of Koblenz. Dinner this evening will be at your own expense in one of the many restuarants in the city.

DAY 4: Koblenz – Bingen/Rüdesheim, 26 mi. (42 km)
The barge sets off early today. The highlight of the morning is to sail along the Loreley, the magnificent rock on the right bank of the Rhine river. The cycle route begins in Oberwesel and leads along the Rhine river, passing charming villages such as Bacharach and Rüdesheim, known for its famous shopping street the Drosselgasse and the Asbach Uralt, a fine brandy, which is available for purchase on board! Bingen is opposite of Rüdesheim on the left bank of the Rhine and is known for its huge flower exhibition, the “Landesgartenschau”.

DAY 5: Bingen/Rüdesheim – Mainz, 22 mi. (35 km)
Bike further along the Rhine river towards Mainz. Here you will meet the Merlijn again, docked close to the city center. In the afternoon you will have time to visit Mainz, the capital of Rhine-Palatinate. Stroll through the old city of Mainz, and see Mainz's Old Town, its inner city, which is the pride and joy of the city-scene. Broad, roomy squares and places, tastefully restored half-timbered houses, and magnificent Baroque churches give the Old Town its charming, "gemuetliches" character. Enjoy your dinner at your own expense in one of the many restaurants of Mainz.

DAY 6: Mainz – Frankfurt am Main, 25 mi. (40 km)
On your last bike tour of this trip you will leave the Rhine bike path upstream and cross the river Rhine to meet the Merlijn in the city of Frankfurt, situated on the Main River. In the late afternoon you will have time to explore this metro pole with its modern buildings, museums, and lively shopping center. The Merlijn will be docked at the Nizzawerft not far to the city and railway station.

DAY 7: Frankfurt am Main
Departure after breakfast.
