Overview
Cycling in Catalonia is an incredible experience! This region boasts a blend of diversity and history that stretches back before the time of the Romans. Its landscapes, culture, and traditions offer a unique opportunity to connect with the past and savor the present.
Catalan cuisine is a blend of Mediterranean and regional flavors with a mix of land and sea and an emphasis on fresh ingredients. Catalonia is also known for its wine production, including the famous sparkling wine, Cava. On this bike tour, you’ll cycle along the coast of Costa Brava, stopping in charming fishing villages and port towns where you’ll have the opportunity to sample these unique flavors. Additionally, you’ll travel through Empordà with its vineyards and olive groves and perhaps stop for a wine tasting.
This cycling tour isn’t just for culinary enthusiasts. History lovers will appreciate the well-preserved old towns, ancient churches, and Roman ruins. The journey ends in Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, where you can explore the world-famous Theatre-Museum Dalí. SImilarly, nature lovers will enjoy the pristine coves like Platja de Castell, the protected wetlands of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, and the long sandy beaches of the Bay of Roses.

Day 1: Arrival in Girona

Day 1: Arrival in Girona
Surrounded by the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava coast, Girona is a historical city with a beautifully preserved medieval Jewish quarter and the stunning Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary. From the ancient Roman city walls enjoy panoramic views of colorful houses lining the Onyar River. For fans of "Game of Thrones," you may recognize this filming location. On this day, take time to explore this special city and savor the delicious Catalan cuisine.

Day 2: Girona - St. Feliu de Guíxols, 28 mi (45 km) | Elevation: + 280 m
Your day starts by picking up your bike at the local office. After an informative meeting, you'll head south toward the Mediterranean Sea on the "El Carrilet '' path. You’ll pass through quaint towns like Quart, known for its well-preserved old town and an ancient church. Cassà de la Selva offers lovely gardens and parks. Llagostera is rich in history with landmarks like the Church of Sant Romà and Town Hall Square. Santa Cristina d’Aro is known for its beautiful landscapes and historical sites. During your journey, you'll notice the Gavarres Massif, mostly covered in oak trees, which play a crucial role in cork production, a significant part of the region's culture and economy. Your day ends in San Feliu de Guíxols, a coastal town famous for its beaches, historic monastery, cultural events, and delicious seafood cuisine.

Day 3: St Feliu de Guíxols - Calella de Palafrugell, 19 mi. (30 km) | Elevation: + 271 m
You'll begin your day by cycling along the coast, enjoying both the coastal roads and seafront boulevards. Your first stop will be Palamós, a lively port town. A few kilometers further, you'll reach Platja de Castell, a pristine cove where you can relax, have a picnic, and swim in the Mediterranean Sea, all while exploring the remains of a nearby ancient Iberian settlement. Your next destination is the charming fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell, known for its beautiful beaches, whitewashed houses, and lovely atmosphere. Lastly, you'll ride along the "Ruta del Tren Petit," a greenway following the old narrow-gauge railway route through scenic countryside. End your day in Calella de Palafrugell, a picturesque coastal village steeped in maritime traditions with pristine beaches, white-washed houses, and cobbled streets.Sample Accommodations:

Day 4: Calella de Palafrugell - Torroella de Montgrí, 18 mi. (29 km) | Elevation: + 180 m
Today you’ll cycle north through an array of towns: Palafrugell, known for its vibrant fresh food market and the Cork Museum, where you may opt to visit to learn about this historic industry; the well-preserved medieval center of Pals, offering a glimpse into the region's history; and a ride through natural wetlands with extensive rice fields. Your journey ends in Torroella de Montgrí, set against the Montgrí Massif Castle from the 13th century, where you'll find panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the picturesque countryside.

Day 5: Torroella de Montgrí - Castelló d'Empúries, 22 mi. (36 km) | Elevation: + 60 m
Heading north, you'll pass by the massive Montgrí mountain and enter the Alt Empordà region. Along the way, you'll encounter the Bay of Roses, known for its long, beautiful sandy beaches that are perfect for both beach lovers and those who enjoy water sports. Nearby, you'll find the quaint village of Sant Martí de Empúries, situated right next to a fantastic beach. Make sure not to miss the Empúries archaeological site, which showcases the remains of Greek and Roman civilizations and their influence on this part of the world. Continuing north, you'll ride through the protected wetlands of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, a natural sanctuary with diverse wildlife, especially for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. On today’s journey, you’ll cycle through century-old vineyards with views of the Pyrenees around you. The route takes you to Vilajuïga and Pau, known for their wineries. End the day back in Castelló d’Empúries.

Day 7: Castelló d'Empúries - Figueres, 27 mi. (43 km) | Elevation: + 370 m
Your last day offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and the beauty of the Catalan landscape. Start the day cycling to Peralada, known as the wine Denomination of Origin (DO) capital, and explore its historic castle and medieval town. Your journey continues through the upper vineyard region, passing through the charming towns of Garriguella, Vilamaniscle, and Rabos, each with ancient groves steeped in viticultural tradition. Conclude your day in Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, where you can explore the world-famous Theatre-Museum Dalí.

This is an easy tour for most regular cyclists that combines half of the tour on quiet secondary roads and the other half on non-paved roads. Cycle routes are 40 km on average without any major climbs.

Barcelona Airport (BCN):
There are two options for onward travel Barcelona to Girona:- You can take the shuttle train to Barcelona Sants main station. The shuttle train leaves from Terminal 2. If your flight arrives at Terminal 1 there is a bus that leaves every 7 minutes and takes 10 minutes to get to Terminal 2. The train from Terminal 2 departs every 30 minutes at :08 and :38. and takes 19 minutes to get to Sants station. A taxi from Barcelona airport to Sants train station usually costs about €25 and the trip takes about 25 minutes.

It is recommended to pre-book the high-speed train tickets as it gets very busy. This can be done on the same website.Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO):
- You can use the Barcelona Bus Service (part of the Sagales Company). Buses leave for the city center every hour. You can find complete timetables on the Sagales website.

We suggest arriving in Girona a few days early to fully immerse yourself in its historical charm. This ancient walled city, with roots dating back to the Roman era, boasts a well preserved medieval Jewish quarter and can be comfortably explored on foot due to its manageable size.
Remarks
On arrival to your accommodation in Girona, you will receive detailed maps with the itinerary, a general map with tourist information, a list of your accommodations, luggage identification tags, and a map to guide you to the cycle shop where you will retrieve your bike the morning before your first day of cycling. Following this, there will be an information session to review the documents you received and discuss highlights and recommendations of the tour. At the conclusion of the tour, you may leave your bikes at the last accommodation. Regarding luggage transfer, please have luggage at reception no later than 9 am. Luggage will be delivered to your next hotel by 5 pm. In the event of an inclement weather forecast, please pack your pannier accordingly.

Travel Documents
It is each traveler's responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with the country or countries you plan to visit. This includes and is not limited to passport validity, visa requirements, and acquisition, blank passport pages required for your destination (s), etc.

*Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. In case of problems with your rental bike, emergency assistance is included. Based on the damage or the location of the breakdown, you may be directed to the bike shop for repairs. If the problem was not your responsibility, our partner will be financially responsible. Please note that normal punctures are excluded from this included service. It is understood that participants on a self-guided tour will know how to repair or change an inner tube. In case of assistance for normal punctures or if you need assistance with personal bikes, a fee will be charged for the roadside assistance. You will have unlimited phone assistance daily from 8am to 8pm.
