Overview
On this 8 day self-guided bike tour in Poland, you will bike the Pilica Cycle Path that starts in Krakow and ends in Warka near Warsaw. Pilica is a 300 km long river which originates not far from Krakow and flows into the Vistula shortly before Warsaw. Wild, with numerous islands, sandy banks, and meanders, the river snakes through forests, meadows, farmlands, and orchards, far from cities and industrial areas. Ten years after Poland entered the EU, there is still this relatively unknown treasure waiting for cyclists to discover it!
The Pilica River is a particular favorite among canoeists as well. There are numerous rental outlets all along the route. It is possible in every locality in the middle and lower course of the river (Przedbórz, Sulejów, Spała, Nowe Miasto, Warka) to be taken a few kilometers upstream and to canoe back. Often there are jetties right next to the hotel. You may book these trips either in advance or decide on the spot to rent a canoe.

Day 1: Arrival in Krakow
Arrival in Krakow and first overnight stay at a centrally located hotel. After check-in, take some time to stroll through Krakow for a first impression of its historic city center and famous nightlife.Day 2: Pilica-Source - Zawada, 19 - 25 mi. (30-40 km)
After a bus ride to Smolen, which takes barely an hour, your cycling adventure begins on a hill with medieval castle ruins. The first kilometers are downhill through Jura landscapes towards the source of the river. We ride further past fish ponds, through a pretty town, with the same name as the river, Pilica, to your accommodation at Zawada.Day 3: Zawada - Przedborz, 41 mi. (65 km)
The flat and quiet roads run through shady forests for the most part and you will scarcely notice the kilometers flying by. This leg is the longest and ends in the small town of Przedbórz which is next to Przedbórz Landscape Park.Day 4: Przedborz - Sulejow, 25 mi. (40 km)
Once more you cycle on tree-lined avenues, along narrow fields and fragrant meadows and pass gardens in full bloom until you come to a very special accommodation.Your hotel was once a Cistercian abbey built on the extensive grounds of a castle from the Middle Ages.Day 5: Sulejów - Spala, 28 mi. (45 km)
For this leg of the journey, you first go past a reservoir with opportunities for swimming if the weather permits. After that, the open air museum at Pilica is well worth a visit. The largest city on the route is Tomaszów, with 30,000 inhabitants. A network of car-free cycle paths takes one to Spała, a popular forest health resort.Day 6: Spala - Nowe Miasto, 28 mi. (45 km)
Spala lies within a forested area that has been a popular hunting and recreational area since the 19th century, first for the Russian Czars and then the Polish presidents. This area also has remnants of recent history: the huge railway bunker at Konewki which was the command post "Anlage Mitte" of the German military during World War II. You overnight in the small town of Nowe Miasto at a guesthouse located directly on the river.Day 7: Nowe Miasto - Warka, 34 mi. (55 km)
This last leg goes past Wyśmierzyce which with its 858 inhabitants and old wooden houses is considered to be the smallest town in Poland and next, through vegetable fields and orchards. The final destination is the four-star hotel and horse breeding farm "Sielanka" ("idyllic land") at Warka.Day 8: End or individual extension of stay
Warsaw is only 60 km from Warka and is easy to reach with the hourly regional train. The journey takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Those who wish to stay a day longer can go on the 30 - 40 km round-trip to Vistula valley and the mouth of the Pilica River. If you’re looking for a different flavor, check out our full list of bike tours in Europe or view all our featured bicycle tours, specials, and news.

Local Travel
Public transportation:
Krakow: The new Kraków Airport train station is located near the passenger terminal, at the rear of the multi-story car park. The connection is operated by Koleje Małopolskie. Trains are equipped with air conditioning, power outlets, Wi-Fi and ticket machine.
Warsaw: Regional train from Warka to Warsaw City center. A rail link has been recently built that connects the city center to the airport. The service is provided by two companies: Szybka Kolej Miejska – SKM (Fast Urban Railway- Lines, S2 and S3) and Koleje Mazowieckie (Masovian Railways).
Taxi:
As in most locations now, there is an influx in Poland of private, unaffiliated taxi drivers. When searching for a cab, especially at the airport, look for those with a company logo displayed on the roof of the vehicle.Climate
Please check local conditions before your arrival. A good website to research regional weather including average high/low temperatures, average rainfall, and more is weatherbase.com.

Important to know
More on taxis:
Taxis in most cities in Poland are easily available and not too expensive. Reliable companies in Warsaw include MPT Radio Taxi, which has English-speaking dispatchers, Super Taxi, and Halo Taxi. All are recognisable by signs on the taxi’s roof with the company name and phone number.
All official taxis in in the cities have their meters adjusted to the appropriate tariff, so you just pay what the meter says. When you board a taxi, make sure the meter is turned on in your presence, which ensures you don’t have the previous passenger’s fare added to yours. Taxis can be waved down on the street, but it’s easier to order a taxi by phone, there’s no extra charge for this service.
