Hennie’s Tripsite Travelogue – Argentina & Chile (Patagonia)

In November 2025, Tripsite founder Hennie van den Hengel travelled to Patagonia to prepare for the launch of Tripsite's brand-new tour – North Patagonia & Andean Lakes – of which Hennie's route was a variation.

From testing local accommodations to exploring the region’s dramatic trails, Hennie experienced the route first-hand, working closely with local guides to shape an itinerary that reflects Tripsite’s commitment to quality and authenticity.

Below is a glimpse of her journey and the behind-the-scenes process that helped bring this spectacular adventure to life for Tripsite travelers.

Sunday Nov 9th, 2025

We arrived in Bariloche, Argentina (Patagonia). We had a great night’s sleep and decided to climb a mountain the next day! That was very difficult and a rather steep climb of more than half an hour (good training for our hike up the volcano later this week). The views on top were breathtaking – impossible to describe in words. We probably saw five or six different lakes and snow-

The Arrival

Traveling together for the first time, two friends and I found Tripsite’s self-guided tour easy to follow. Arriving the night before the official DIY walk, we enjoyed warm hospitality at Hotel Fontebella.

That evening, we wandered around Assisi, spellbound by the breathtaking views of the Umbrian valley and our first taste of local life and local cuisine in the Basilica of St. Clare piazza, where local children played football, families savored gelato, and the water fountain glistened in the orange hues of sunset.

Day 1: A Leisurely Walk in Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (5-9 Miles)

Along the Danube – Passau to Vienna: Such a Perfect Trip!

How it all began

I emailed Tripsite with questions about a trip and they responded right away, helping us choose a trip that fit our priorities. What started as 4 friends soon grew to 6, and as word spread in our community, our group expanded to 17—six couples and five singles…all friends from eastern Canada.

We call ourselves “Shift Happens”, a group of 17 (16 bikers and 1 non-biker) from the provinces of PEI & NS in Canada. Our group’s bike abilities ranged from beginner to competitive and our ages ranged from 64 to 81.

Arrival

My husband and I arrived in Passau by train the day prior to our cruise and took a stroll to view the docking area where we would board the Swiss Crown the following morning.

Ireland by Road and Bike: A Sisters’ Journey Through the Emerald Isle

Ireland has a way of capturing your heart the moment you arrive — winding mountain roads, friendly locals, lively music, and a landscape that changes with every turn. My sister and I decided to experience it all — part by car, part by bike — exploring Ireland’s history, coastlines, and culture one slow, scenic mile at a time.

Day 1 — Dublin to Kilkenny: Monastic Valleys and Mountain Views

Our journey began south of Dublin as we wound through the Wicklow Mountains, often called the “Garden of Ireland.” The drive was stunning — pine forests giving way to open bogland dotted with free-roaming sheep. A highlight of the day was Glendalough (pictured below), an early medieval monastic site surrounded by lush forest and calm lakes. The air smelled rich and mossy as we wandered among the ruins. For coffee lovers, Poppies Café in Enniskerry is a must-stop — I enjoyed my first latte of the trip under soft September sunshine.

“Brilliant, Just Brilliant” - Cycling the Moselle from Koblenz to Saarburg

Off we go…following the Mosel Wein Strasse.

By the time we signed up for the Bike & Boat trip from Koblenz to Saarburg, it was already our third go-round with Tripsite. Not exactly our first rodeo on the whole bike-and-boat scene. And just like the first two, this one was amazing! But here’s the truth: no matter how many times you do one of these bike-and-boat trips, it never loses its magic. Each one feels like stepping into a brand-new story. And this one? Let’s just say it was a grin-on-your-face-for-days kind of amazing.

The most challenging part, as always, came afterward. Back home, the questions rolled in: “So, how was it?” You’d think by the third trip I’d have mastered the answer, right? Nope. Every time, I’m standing there, tongue-tied. How do you sum up days of pedaling past castles, sipping wine on a terrasse somewhere, surrounded by medieval history and architecture, and pretending you’re basically living in a travel brochure? “It was awesome” just doesn’t cut it.

Along the Danube, Four Country Tour - Our First Tripsite Tour Surpassed Expectations

The 'Along the Danube, Four Country Tour' marked our first expedition with Tripsite and surpassed expectations. On Day One we arrived in and explored Passau. Located at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau, also known as the 'Venice of Bavaria', is a harmonious blend of modern and medieval times. Sadly, due to flight delays, we arrived in Passau Saturday evening, limiting our opportunities to explore the many Baroque-style churches, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral and monuments such as Veste Oberhaus. Nevertheless, we enjoyed a relaxing evening in the Old Town Center while connecting with the unhurried spirit of the nightlife community. Sunday being a day of rest in Germany (monuments have limited hours and stores are closed), we decided to take advantage of the town’s peaceful routine as we meandered through the city's narrow, winding alleys, the ethereal sound of a church choir blended with the echoes of the stunning Gothic and Baroque buildings. We walked along the Inn River,

Florence to Rome: A Challenging but Tremendously Satisfying Bike Tour Through Italy’s Umbria Region

Embracing a little extra adventure.

I love group bike tours because I meet people who share my love for seeing countries close up, on a bicycle. I love guided bike tours because smart locals share their love for their country with us – and know secret routes, great cafes, and bathroom locations. A lot of my favorite rides have been boat and bike tours, which have groups and guides and the same bed each night.

But I recently decided to accept a challenge. My brother couldn't join me for our usual annual ride, and I needed to be in Italy for family obligations. So I signed up for a self-guided ride on which, by fluke of the marketplace, I was the only rider. It was an awesome itinerary starting and ending with nights in Florence and Rome, with six days of riding between two cities about an hour's train ride from each – Arezzo in the north and Poggio Mirteto in the south.

I realize that a solo trip is not many people’s dream vacation, but this chubby 70-year-
