Overview
The splendid halls and grounds of Christ Church College have formed the film sets and inspiration for two of the world’s most enchanting and popular stories - the Harry Potter series of J.K. Rowling’s invention, and Lewis Carroll’s marvelous creation Alice in Wonderland. Fans of The Golden Compass will also recognize parts of the college!
Founded by King Henry VIII, Christ Church College is identified from afar by its grand Tom Tower (the work of esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren who designed St. Paul’s Cathedral, London), its Tom Quad (the largest quad of any Oxford college), and its Great Dining Hall, which was used as the seat of Parliament of King Charles I during the English Civil War. The college has produced 13 British prime ministers, in addition to former prime ministers of Pakistan and Ceylon.
The Great Dining Hall, an awe-inspiring feat of architecture that perfectly encapsulates the traditions and atmosphere of enchanting Oxford, was the inspiration for the enormous dining hall in the Harry Potter film series, drawing hundreds of thousands to its splendid interior annually. Skipping the line is a real boon when the crowds often snake all around the college to get a glimpse of this glorious and iconic room!
Outside the Great Dining Hall, you’ll stand on the very cloister and staircase used in the Harry Potter films, an experience that will leave you spellbound!
Lewis Carroll also found inspiration for the magical world of ‘Wonderland’ in the curious, echoing buildings of the esteemed city of Oxford, and especially in Christ Church College, where he was a student of mathematics. It was whilst punting along the River Thames that winds its way through splendid Oxford that Carroll devised the story of Alice in Wonderland, a fairytale world of curious characters who captured the imagination of its young readers, and even their parents!
Skip the line on this extra-special walking tour of the film sets of Harry Potter and The Golden Compass, and the college that inspired one of Britain’s most celebrated authors!
