Most of our cycling trips have bicycles included as part of the trip package with only a few exceptions. The bicycles vary with each tour. Typically they are 21-speed hybrids. More specific information about them is listed on each tour's "Details" page, and will also be provided in the trip packet. The bicycles are kept in excellent condition and very well maintained. The gears vary from 7 to 24, depending on the tour. The majority of the bicycles also come equipped with handbrakes, pannier or saddle bags, small repair kit, pump, lock and by request, a child's safety saddle/seat may also be installed on the back (the child cannot weigh more than 55 lbs. for most bikes).
Generally, both men and women's frames are available, and the bicycles will be assigned according to gender unless requested otherwise. We are finding that more and more of our tours include bikes with step through frames. Before your trip, the bicycle seats will be adjusted according to your height. You may also bring along a gel cover to put over the bike saddle for more comfort, and/or bring along padded bicycle shorts. Bringing your own saddle and/or pedals is usually allowed but not always; please advise if you wish to bring your own saddle and/or pedals.
When available, a tandem (or 2-person bicycle pictured on the left) can be requested for use on your trip; for some trips, there may be a surcharge of around $100 for this bike. A child tandem may also be available. By request, we can provide information on bringing, using or renting recumbent bicycles. Though not included on any of our tours, they can be rented at certain locations, such as in Amsterdam, for which we can provide additional information.
We are very excited that many of our tours now have available E bikes (electric bicycles) for rental. This option makes it possible for those who love to cycle but find it increasingly difficult to either master the terrain or the distance. E bikes are NOT motorized but have a battery which enables you to pedal with ease. It has been described as having a constant tail wind at your back. Keep in mind for those of you riding self guided on an electric bike, that fixing a flat is more technical than fixing a flat on a regular bike so make sure you are familiar with this before embarking. If you would like more information on the E bikes, please contact us!
Bicycle helmets are not required on any of our cycling trips, with the possible exception of children under the age of 12. Though we recommend the use of helmets and cannot be held responsible for non-usage, they are optional and should you wish to use one, they must be either brought along or be purchased on location. For some tours, they may be available for rent (or free), but this we cannot guarantee. When children's helmets are required, they are generally provided free of charge.
Children's bicycles are generally also available, and must be requested at time of booking. For a number of our Bike & Boat tours in Holland, a tag-along is available for children age 4 to 9 weighing no more than 77 lbs. and not exceeding a height of 3'8". To make cycling a little easier for the child, this bicycle is attached to the accompanying adult's, and the child pedals along while the adult helps by pulling the bicycle. Please request this bicycle at time of booking.
You can obtain bicycle protection through us at the time of booking. For hybrid touring or road bikes, the cost is €10 for an 8 day tour. For electric bikes, the cost is €20. Bicycle protection covers the cost of the repair or replacement of bicycle parts in case of an accident. It also protects against theft of the bike while it was locked. The key to the integral bike lock will always have to be produced in order for bicycle protection to cover the loss.
Bringing your own bicycle is generally not a problem, but does not always guarantee a discount. Ask us for details.
