Overview
Your bike tour in Austria will be in the region of Salzkammergut (Lake District) situated snugly at the foothills of the Northern Alps. It is a masterpiece of majestic mountains and mystic blue lakes that stretch across the provinces of Styria, Salzburg, and Upper Austria.
The name of the region stems from the medieval chamber estate Kammergut, which produced considerable wealth for the Hapsburgs in Vienna with their prosperous salt mining.
The area's unparalleled beauty is so great that it attracted many ambitious artists (including Romantic), whose works were noteworthy enough to draw in poets and composers as well; and thus the region soon established itself as a haven for tranquility and artistic inspiration.
Highlights
- Mozart's beloved musical city of Salzburg
- The most famous of Salzkammergut's lakes, Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee
- Imposing Alpine backdrop of white peaks and hidden caves
- Wolfgangsee with its imposing Schafberg
- Gmunden
- Imperial summer residence Bad Ischl
