Via Claudia Augusta was an ancient and important Roman road, known now as the Romantic Road. It is extremely popular among cyclists and hikers, traversing the very ground where history was made.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Augsburg
Fly to Munich airport and take the train to Augsburg. A college town, and the second-largest in Bavaria, it is also (following Trier) the second oldest city in all of Germany. Main attractions include the Perlachturm tower, built-in 1182, and the Fuggerei - the world's oldest social housing project. This is a walled enclave within the city (a city within a city) that houses 200 impoverished tenants who pay a symbolic rate of one Euro annually to live in the estate. Rows of quaint yellow flats embraced by vines have stood on this street since 1523. The history of the founding of the complex by the Fugger family, specifically Jakob Fugger, is very interesting if you have time to do a little research. More than a pious contribution to society, this enormously wealthy man had some self-centered motives at heart also. If you visit, be sure to check out some of the rules for residing there, such as dogs are not allowed, cats are!

Day 2: Augsburg - Lake Wörthsee, 39 mi. (65 km)
The day starts with a welcome briefing and distribution of bicycles at 8:30 am. Across green meadows and through rustic Bavarian villages and towns you bike to Lake Ammersee. On the shores of the lake, cozy inns with sunny terraces and shady gardens invite you to take a break. Further on, this bike tour in Germany takes you to Lake Wörthsee which is well-known for its clean, warm water.

Day 3: Lake Wörthsee - Murnau, 36 mi. (60 km)
On the edge of Lake Wörthsee and Lake Prisensee, your bike to the Andechs monastery. Pass little Weilheim - the monks of the surrounding 12 monasteries contributed to the modern appearance of the town. If you feel like swimming, you have an opportunity to do so in Lake Staffelsee or Lake Riegsee near Murnau.

Day 4: Murnau - Füssen/Schwangau, 36 mi. (60 km)
Pedal your way through beautiful meadows and idyllic pastures to Füssen/Schwangau. Along the way, you can't miss the famous Wieskirche (Bavarian Rococo). Among other highlights of Füssen, you may find the oldest fresco in all of Germany in the crypt of St. Mang Basilica. It dates back to about the year 980.

Day 5: Füssen/Schwangau - Schongau, 30 mi. (50 km)
It is recommended that you visit King Ludwig's fairytale castle in Königswinkel - Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein - and the excavated Roman thermal bath at the valley station of Mount Tegelberg. Via Steingaden and Peiting, you will cycle along the scenic Via Claudia Augusta to Schongau.

Day 6: Schongau - Landsberg/Lech, 21 mi. (35 km)
Schongau is an ancient Bavarian fortress. Despite its violent past, the old city wall is still in very good shape.
Today you enjoy the marvelous view over the valley of the Lech River. Altenstadt (Roman Basilica), Hochenfurch, Epfach (Roman Abodiacum, museum) and Vilgertshofen (baroque pilgrim's church) are points of interest you may want to visit before you reach Landsberg.

Day 7: Landsberg/Lech - Augsburg, 27 mi. (45 km)
Visit the medieval old town of Landsberg/Lech surrounded by the wild Lech River. You may want to visit the historic town hall and gothic Bavarian gate. You pedal further via Kaufering am Lech (translated Kaufering on the Lech) to Königsbrunn along 11 km of the best-preserved section of the Via Claudia. Finally, you come to the old Bavarian residence Friedberg and on to Fugger city Augsburg. Many monuments from all epochs dominate the appearance of the city.

Skill Level — Moderate
This is a moderate self-guided hotel tour. For a regular cyclist, this tour is very manageable. Routes follow bike paths and country roads with little traffic. Daily distances range from 28 to 38 miles with the whole day to complete the mileage. In the first 3 days, some climbs have to be tackled. After Füssen, you bike along the Lech River which is almost completely flat to Augsburg. The roads are mostly paved, but there are some long sections on gravel paths. Your tour begins at approximately 500m elevation. You will climb to a maximum of 900m and end your tour at approximately the same elevation in which you started.

Fly to Munich airport.
Local Travel
From Munich airport, take the train to Augsburg. Ride is approximately 1 hr 30 mins, cost ± €20 depending on train and connections. Once in Augsburg, it’s just a short walk or taxi to the hotel.
Climate
Bavaria is in the wet-warm-moderate climate zone. The ideal time for a cycling tour is therefore spring, summer and autumn. Due to Austria’s location in the Alpine foothills, there is always a chance of showers in summer. Don’t forget your raingear!
Remarks
Available for this tour is an app that can be downloaded to your smartphone (Apple or Android). You can request the GPX tracks by email which you can then upload into your device. The maps are available in offline mode to avoid data charges. Just ask us for a helpful PDF file with step by step instructions from downloading the app, to uploading the GPX tracks and hotel lists.

The ride was always a. ‘bucket list’ item, & the scenery was outstanding, & the GPS was very beneficial. However, I wouldn’t rate the ride as our best experience, as there were a few disappointments. The Augsburg hotel was not very good. At the outset (day 1) the instructor was briefing a large group of German speaking cyclists, (for ~20 minutes) & advised he’d brief the English speaking cyclists afterwards, but he just came over & said we could start the ride, but we mentioned that we were advised to go to the Dom Hotel for instructions, & he just said - ‘what do you want to know?’, & it was annoying that we had to wait ~1 hour & cycle an additional 2km to get that instruction. Plus, the bikes did not have drink bottle cages, which would have been beneficial. I acknowledge the advice regarding 20kg weight restriction on luggage, & when we left Australia, our (3 pieces) luggage were weighed at the airline checkin at Read More

Another very well organised tour with a well selected route on quiet roads and cycle tracks mostly The Accommodation was very good and the bag drops very easy. The bikes were excellent. The info book accompanying the maps was clear with good additional information

I liked the app showing the tracks, it would be even better if it automatically zoomed in around intersections. The bicycles are good (we used the non-electric enhanced ones), smooth gear switching, adequate gear ratio.
I am not sure if this is obvious to others, but a large part of this route (60km give or take) goes over gravel trails, which is not fun to say the least.
While hotels along the route are generally good, one night accommodation was a real dump, I did not expect that, and it was very disappointing.
A couple of suggestions:
- bring your own phone holder to make sure the phone with the map is mounted properly
- sometimes the luggage is left in the reception area, and sometimes put away in a storage room. Ask the receptionist if the luggage arrived to be sure, to avoid wasted time.

We did this trip with two friends in October, 2019. We enjoyed the route. The villages were close together. We were a little challenged to find restaurants for lunch given the day of the week or holiday. We quickly figured out to plan for some food along the way. The route was primarily on on bike paths and secondary roads. German drivers were very accommodating. The combination of markers and maps was very good. In the future we will ask for the GPS directions.
The hotels were quite comfortable and centrally located. One hotel was rather dated, but comfortable all the same.
We had previously organized our own bike trips, but found it much easier to have all the arrangements made including the bike and transportation of the bags. We will definitely do another tour with Tripsite.

Be adventurous and try a self-guided trip in Germany. You'll enjoy beautiful scenery, lakes warm enough to swim in and charming Bavarian towns. The routes are well marked. If you enjoy cycling at your own pace, this is the trip for you.

Great tour with fabulous scenery, great towns and on most days plenty of beer gardens. Mostly safe/limited cars with fair hotels in great locations. Romantic Road is great. Probably more difficult vs easy to moderate....2 days have some large hills....but manageable. The romantic road (first part of this trip) is also amazing but this portion has better hotels

Our group has done bike trips with Hennie for more than ten years and in spite of a couple of days of cold rainy weather this ride had some of the most spectacular scenery we have ever encountered! As always the people of Germany are so friendly and accommodating. The beer is fantastic, the Bavarian pretzels are wonderful and food well what can one say. Overall one of our best trips!

We went to this tour, my wife and I, on september 2015. We enjoy at first Oktoberfest, the amazing beer festival. Then we went to Augsburg, a very nice town, to start the journey. The trip Augsburg-Worthsee was easy, but we got lost a litle bit to leave Augsburg. We have to ask for directins some times. After leaving the city, everithing goes easy.
The hotel in Worthsee, actually, in Inning, was very comfortable.
We faced some troubles in the tour to Murnau, but it was our fault: we turned following red signs instead of blue, that was the right color.
After some wrong small trips, we finaly got to Murnau.
All small cities in this tour are amazing. The churches, even in rural area, are very rich and beautiful.
This bike tour around Bavarian was one of the most incredible trip we ever did.
We higly recommend this trip.

Beautiful ride on, for the most part, very safe roads/trails. Incredibly picturesque. I would be very happy to repeat the same trip. If I were to do it again, I'd bring a gps as we got lost a few times.

We went on this self guided tour Summer of 2010 and had an amazing time! The scenery is beautiful every miles of the way. You go through parks, forests, quaint Bavarian towns, and past some beautiful lakes. The accommodations were phenomenal. We were very satisfied with the quality and locations of the Inns. If we had to name our favorite part of this trip, it would be riding towards the Alps on our way to fussen. Definitely take a tour of the Neuschwanstein castle! The terrain on this trip is a nice challenge for any level biker.
