-
Overview
This guided cycling tour in western Sardinia combines scenic coastal riding with food, wine, and cultural experiences rooted in the island's agricultural traditions. Following a route from Alghero to the Sinis Peninsula, cyclists ride through fishing towns, vineyard-covered hills, olive groves, and rural landscapes, with visits to sites including Tharros, one of Sardinia's most important Phoenician and Roman settlements.
Food plays a central role throughout the tour, from cooking classes and ricotta cheese-making to olive oil and Malvasia wine tastings. Traditional Sardinian dishes such as malloreddus and culurgiones feature regularly on the menu, while visits to family-run agriturismos and wineries provide insight into the food and wine traditions across the Planargia region and the Gulf of Oristano.

Day 4: Planargia Loop & Malvasia Wine Region, 27 mi (44 km)

Day 7: Departure from Torre GrandeDay 1: Welcome to Alghero
The tour begins in Alghero, a port city on Sardinia’s northwest coast known for its fortified old town, Catalan heritage, and long seafront promenade facing the Mediterranean. Guests meet at Hotel Villa Mosca in the afternoon for introductions, bike fitting, and a short test ride toward the Valverde Sanctuary outside the city. The opening ride is designed to check equipment and give riders time to settle into the week ahead without rushing straight into a full riding day. After returning to town, there is time to walk through Alghero’s historic center before the welcome dinner. (D)Sample Accommodation: Hotel Villa Mosca
Day 2: Alghero - Capo Caccia Loop, 35 mi (56 km) | Rolling terrain
The first full ride heads west from Alghero toward Capo Caccia, following coastal roads above Porto Conte and the protected marine reserve. The terrain rolls steadily throughout the day with repeated short climbs rather than long sustained ascents. The route passes vineyards, Mediterranean scrub, and sections of exposed limestone coastline where the sea remains visible for much of the ride. A stop near Porto Conte breaks up the morning before continuing toward the headland and the quieter roads surrounding Capo Caccia. Back in Alghero, the evening centers around Sardinian food traditions with a hands-on pasta-making cooking class focused on regional recipes still commonly prepared across the island. (B, L, D)
Sample Accommodation: Hotel Villa MoscaDay 3: Alghero - Bosa - Tresnuraghes, 36 mi (59 km) | Rolling to hilly terrain
Today’s route follows the coastal road south from Alghero to Bosa, one of the most scenic stretches of riding in Sardinia. Traffic is usually light outside midsummer, and the road alternates between cliffside sections, inland curves, and long views across the western coastline. Bosa marks the main stop of the day. The town sits along the Temo River beneath Malaspina Castle and remains one of the few river towns in Sardinia. After time to explore the waterfront and old quarter, the route turns inland through vineyard and orchard country toward Tresnuraghes in the Planargia region. In the evening, a local producer hosts a ricotta cheese-making demonstration, introducing one of Sardinia’s most established pastoral traditions. (B, D)
Sample Accommodation: Hotel Villa AsfodeliDay 4: Planargia Loop & Malvasia Wine Region, 27 mi (44 km) | Rolling hills
The shortest riding day of the week explores the inland villages surrounding Tresnuraghes and the Planargia plateau. The roads are quieter here, passing vineyards, stone houses, and mural-covered villages including Tinnura and Modolo. The shorter mileage allows more time off the bike during the day, including a winery visit focused on Malvasia production in western Sardinia. Lunch is served picnic-style before the route returns through the countryside toward Tresnuraghes. (B, L, D)
Sample Accommodation: Hotel Villa AsfodeliDay 5: Tresnuraghes - Riola Sardo - Torre Grande, 33 mi (54 km) | Mostly flat terrain along some gravel roads
Leaving the hill country behind, today’s route gradually transitions into flatter agricultural landscapes south of Oristano. To avoid traffic, some sections of today's route are along gravel roads (appx 3mi/5km). The roads pass olive groves, small farms, and quiet inland villages before reaching Riola Sardo for an olive oil tasting and lunch stop. The final section continues toward Torre Grande on the Gulf of Oristano, where fishing boats and long beaches replace the hill towns of previous days. Later in the afternoon, the group visits a local agriturismo for a second cooking session using seasonal ingredients and traditional Sardinian recipes. (B, D)
Sample Accommodation: Hotel Lido BeachDay 6: Sinis Peninsula & Tharros Loop Ride, 25 mi (41 km) | Flat coastal terrain
The final ride explores the Sinis Peninsula west of Oristano, an area known for coastal wetlands, fishing villages, and archaeological sites rather than resort development. The terrain stays mostly flat throughout the day, with some sections following gravel roads (appx 6mi/9km). The route reaches the archaeological site of Tharros, where Phoenician and Roman ruins extend toward the sea beside San Giovanni di Sinis. There is time to walk through the open-air site before continuing along the peninsula past beaches and small coastal settlements. Back in Torre Grande, the week ends with a farewell dinner featuring seafood and local wines from western Sardinia. (B, D)
Sample Accommodation: Hotel Lido BeachDay 7: Departure from Torre Grande
The tour concludes after breakfast in Torre Grande. A private transfer to Oristano train station is included for onward rail connections toward Cagliari and other parts of Sardinia. (B) -

Extra Info
Skill Level — Moderate
This tour is designed for riders comfortable cycling consecutive days on rolling terrain. Daily routes average between 32–59 km and follow mostly secondary roads with limited traffic. Some sections include moderate climbs, particularly around Capo Caccia and the inland hills near Tresnuraghes. To avoid traffic, certain portions of the route use compact gravel roads. Riders should feel comfortable handling occasional uneven surfaces while maintaining a relaxed touring pace. E-bike upgrades are available for riders wanting additional support on climbing sections or longer riding days.
Airport Info
The tour begins in Alghero on Sardinia’s northwest coast. The closest airport is Alghero Airport (AHO), located approximately 15 minutes from the first hotel.
The tour ends in Torre Grande near Oristano. On Day 7, a private transfer to Oristano train station is included. From there, travelers can continue by rail to Cagliari Airport (CAG) for onward departures.
Climate
Western Sardinia has a long cycling season extending from spring through autumn. Spring departures offer green landscapes and mild temperatures, while late summer and early autumn bring warmer sea temperatures and harvest activity in the wine regions.
Coastal sections can experience wind exposure, particularly around Capo Caccia and the Sinis Peninsula. Temperatures are generally warmer inland during midday riding hours.
Remarks
Food is central to this itinerary rather than an added activity. The route is structured around regional producers, agriturismos, and small family-run operations that reflect Sardinia’s rural food culture.
Throughout the week, guests participate in: a Sardinian pasta-making class near Alghero; a ricotta cheese-making demonstration in the countryside; a wine tasting focused on local Malvasia production; an olive oil tasting in Riola Sardo; and a second cooking class using seasonal ingredients sourced directly from local farms.
Meals emphasize western Sardinian specialties, including seafood, handmade pasta, sheep’s milk cheeses, olive oil, roast pork, and regional wines.
