Discover the vibrant side of Eastern Spain on this cycling tour which follows the Ojos Negros, Spain's longest greenway. This well-signposted rails-to-trails path follows the old Iron Ore Railway that once linked Sagunto and Ojos Negros. You will pedal through three provinces: Teruel, Castellón and Valencia, each with its own distinct identity.
Starting in the medieval town of Albarracín, pedal through lush valleys and alongside rivers towards Teruel's Mudéjar wonders, setting the tone for a journey filled with history, culture, and natural beauty.
As you continue cycling through idyllic countryside, learn about truffles in Estacion Mora, pass through charming towns, and enjoy incredible views of the Sierra Calderona and Sierra de Espadán National Parks. Arriving at Segorbe, discover why it’s been declared a town of cultural interest.
Heading southward, the coastal scenery awaits! Cycle through orange groves to Canet and take in the refreshing coastal breeze and breathtaking landscapes. Day 1: Albarracín
The tour begins in Albarracín, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its remarkably preserved architecture reflecting Moorish, Christian, and medieval influences. The walled town's red sandstone cliffs, narrow streets, and cultural heritage make it one of Spain's most picturesque destinations. Take time this afternoon and evening to wander the medieval streets, visit the castle and cathedral, admire views of the Guadalaviar River, and savor traditional Aragonese cuisine.Sample accommodation: Hotel Albarracín
Day 2: Albarracín - Teruel, 30 mi. (48 km)
Following breakfast, begin the day cycling through the protected forest of Los Pinares de Rodeno, known for its scenic lookouts, cave paintings, and Domarque’s recreational area. Continue towards Teruel pedaling alongside the Guadalaviar and Alfambra rivers and passing through charming villages like Bezas, Campillo, and San Blas. Spend this evening in Teruel, a UNESCO world heritage site, renowned for its Mudéjar architecture and the legendary tale of the "Lovers of Teruel." You cycle the pine forests of Pista de Fuente Cerrada and the scenic Sierra Javalambre. As you descend into Puebla de Valverde, discover La Fondica de la Estación, an outdoor terrace along the Ojos Negros Greenway offering picturesque views. From here, continue pedaling through Kerme oaks over stone bridges and viaducts before reaching La Estación Mora. This region boasts the world's largest production of black truffles. Day 4: Estación Mora - Segorbe, 42 mi. (67 km)
First you follow a leisurely downhill path that features the Albentosa tunnel and a viaduct offering panoramic views. Traveling through El Palancar forest, pass charming villages before reaching Viver where you will have the option to participate in a guided winery visit. From here, continue to Navajas, with its impressive El Salto de la Novia waterfall and historic elm tree planted in 1636. This biking trail follows the Ojos Negros Greenway, which is Spain’s longest greenway at 240 kilometers. Approximately half of the route is free from traffic, while the other half is shared with minimal traffic. The path offers a diverse terrain mix, encompassing asphalt or paved stretches, gravel paths, and natural trails. While a significant portion of this route is relatively flat due to its former railway status, there might still be some sections with mild inclines or gentle slopes.
