How to Survive a Long Flight

You just booked a wonderful bike and boat trip in Europe, let’s just say Mantova to Venice (It’s one of our favorites). You are preparing for your upcoming adventure by researching each point of interest, emailing or calling your favorite Tripsite Tour Specialist with last minute questions, and scrambling to cram everything you need into luggage that never seems big enough but always seems to weigh too much! In all this chaos it is easy to forget about preparing for the first leg of your journey-your flight!

Venice is one of the most charming places in Europe.

Let’s just assume that your trip involves a trans-Atlantic or some ridiculously long flight, although in our opinion, even the shortest of airplane rides can be uncomfortable on occasion. So feel free to apply the following tips whenever you hop on a plane to ensure the most comfortable flight possible.

Travel Comfortable.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many people just don’t do it. You are going on a bike/bike and boat tour. You will be pedaling your way through scenic countrysides and cobbled streets. Save your dress clothes for a special night out and throw on some comfortable active wear for the airplane ride.

Bring something to entertain yourself.

This could be a book, Ipad, Ipod, sudoku, or crossword puzzle. You really need something to occupy your time because it’s wishful thinking that you will be able sleep for the entire flight. Make sure all of your electronic devices are all charged up!

In-flight entertainment can limited or expensive...

How to actually get some sleep.

Buy a neck pillow. Stay away from buying them at the terminal retail store because they tend to be a bit pricey. To avoid paying too much, go to Amazon and purchase one before your trip. An eye mask is also a great investment because you can’t guarantee the lights will be dim! The person next to you might just read the entire flight or have the window shade open. If you need extra lower back support, ask your flight attendant for a pillow.

Stay healthy.

This might be the most important tip. Airplanes are like incubators for illness. Bring a large water bottle, plenty of healthy snacks (Granola, fruit, trail mix, etc.), sanitary wipes, and some sort of immune boost (Eboost, Airborne, vitamins). You really don’t want to get sick before the best bike vacation of your life!

Be prepared.

Make sure that you have everything you need in one bag (Personal bag) so you can keep it under your seat and access it throughout the trip without having to fumble with the overhead compartment. It really helps to pack some essentials (lip balm, hand cream/sanitizer, toothbrush, Tylenol) in a small plastic bag beforehand.

So there you have it. If you have any other tips to share, please do so in the comments below!

We wish you safe, happy, and comfortable travels!

My biggest discomfort is the return flight...it seems to take forever. Do you suggest or recommend any over the counter meds for a more restful return flight?
