Day 1: Arrival in Avignon & transfer to Châteauneuf du Pape
Avignon is a charming medieval town that boasts cobbled streets and a rich history, featuring landmarks such as the Pope's Palace and St. Benezet Bridge. At 4:30 pm, a taxi will transfer you from Avignon train station to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with the option to adjust the time and place to fit your arrival schedule. Check-in at your guesthouse in Châteauneuf du Pape is possible from 5 pm. The village, meaning "New castle of the Pope," was selected as the summer residence of the Popes of Avignon, and its hilltop castle ruins offer breathtaking views. The Popes introduced vines to the region in the 14th century, producing wines that have been famous for centuries. Enjoy an overnight stay in Châteauneuf du Pape. We suggest that you arrive a day or two early in Avignon as this ancient city offers a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, as well as a vibrant food and wine scene.Standard accommodation: The Wine B&B
Upgraded accommodation: La Mere GermaineDay 2: Châteauneuf du Pape - Château Mont Redon - Châteauneuf du Pape, 7 or 5.3 mi. (11 or 8.5 km)
In the morning, take a walk through the vines and alongside red rocks that were deposited here 15,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. These rocks absorb heat during the day and emit it at night, creating a constant warmth in the vineyards that helps produce powerful and spicy red wines. We recommend the full loop option, which includes a pass by the famous Château Mont Redon estate.
The afternoon is yours to explore the charming Châteauneuf-du-Pape village at your leisure, wandering from one wine shop to the next and up to the castle, or you may choose to indulge in a half-day wine tour with a local wine expert. During the tour, you'll gain insights into the secrets of the vines and participate in a wine-tasting session, while learning about the concepts of terroir and appellation and refining your wine-tasting technique. Enjoy another night in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.Important Note: The Vaudieu, Nalys, and Solitude wineries are closed on Sundays (like most wine estates). However, Mont Redon is open for tastings on Sundays (although cellar visits are not possible). If your trip begins with the first walk on Sunday, we recommend that you do the Mont-Redon walk on Sunday and the Vaudieu, Nalys, and Solitude tour on Monday.

These parcels of vines will lead you from one estate to the next, creating a splendid loop walk. You'll have the chance to visit three widely-known wine estates - Vaudieu, Nalys, and Solitude - all of which are centuries old and happy to share their savoir-faire with you during a wine tasting. When it comes to the wine, the reds are deep and heavily spiced, while the whites offer a surprising combination of almond, spice, and honeysuckle notes. At 2:30 pm, you will transfer from Chateauneuf to Séguret, where you'll spend the night.Elevation: + 100m / - 100m

Day 6: Le Barroux - Malaucène, 8 mi. (13 km)
Mt. Veloux's impressive silhouette beckons as you hike closer toward the mountain. Through shaded paths of pine and cedar, the route leads to the chapel of Piaut. This chapel was once a place of pilgrimage for locals during times of drought, where they climbed to pray for rain. After taking in the views, you'll descend the pilgrimage path toward Malaucène. Here, you'll have the option to add an additional loop to your trek. The loop covers a distance of 17 km with an elevation gain of +400m and a loss of -400m, taking approximately 5 hours to complete.

It’s advisable to check local conditions before arriving in Provence. The best times for hiking are during May, June, September, and October. Although Provence is renowned for its mild climate and clear skies - with an average of 300 sunny days a year - hikers should be mindful of the notorious Mistral winds. These winds can occur at any time, but typically start in the fall and continue through the winter months, with the strongest gusts usually experienced in January and February. Despite this, the Mistral winds are also responsible for creating the incredibly clear skies and unique light in Provence that artists find so appealing.
Recommended
The trails can at times be rocky, so good boots with ankle support are advised. We also recommend using walking poles for this holiday. Poles are helpful to increase power going uphill, but especially to relieve your knees going down hills. You will be in a zone where water is scarce, so be prepared to carry your day’s requirements of water. Please bring a small backpack of 20-40 liters in which you will carry what is needed for the day’s walk, including your picnic. Our advice: It is better to take a larger backpack – they are more comfortable to carry and easier to transfer in the taxi.
Remarks
It is possible to book a half-day wine tour in the Southern Rhône premium wine region. A local wine expert will reveal a wealth of secrets about the vines and explain the key elements of the wine-making process as you visit the cellar and taste four to five wines at a local wine estate (depending on the wine expert you visit 1 or 2 wine estates). The tasting characteristics, aging potential, and varying influences of the terroir and cellar methods will all be described. Pick up and drop off will be in Chateauneuf du Pape.
