The Portuguese St. James Hike

  • To walk the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) in Portugal is to experience more than just a hike. Once one of the most important medieval Christian pilgrimages, this route continues to be extremely popular today. Some walk to honor the Apostle James, others to seek their own spiritual journey or physical challenge, but everyone who walks the Camino, is deemed a pilgrim.

This itinerary features Portugal's Central Camino as it winds its way through farmland and forests, interspersed with historic towns. You will enjoy Roman and medieval bridges and artifacts and follow part of an ancient Roman road on your way north from Ponte de Lima.

    Highlights:

    • Religious architectural sites
    • Natural landscapes and countryside scenarios
    • Delicious gastronomy and town terraces
    • Santiago de Compostela - UNESCO World Heritage site

If you fly to Lisbon, the airport is located quite close to Lisbon center. You can take a taxi or train into the city. Lisbon airport is now connected directly to Lisbon center (Saldahna) by underground metro. If you are continuing onward from the airport to Porto, you can take the Airport metro to Orient station and from there, train to Porto with 0 transfers.

    Climate

Though this tour is offered year-round, the best time for your pilgrimage would be March through October. The spring months of April/May or the Autumn months of September/October generally provide the best weather for walking. Portugal is often quite hot and very humid in the summer months. It’s also important to note that because Portugal sits on the Atlantic coast, the weather can change rapidly and you will need to take rain gear regardless of what time of year you choose to walk. If walking in the late fall and winter months, please pack accordingly. Please check local conditions before your arrival. A good web site to use to research regional weather conditions is weatherbase.com. Here you will find average high/low temperatures and average rainfall as well.

    Airport transfers:

Once your tour is confirmed, please send us your air travel details so that we can arrange your transfer.

    Documents:

Before you travel, please check your country's passport and visa requirements and the passport and visa requirements of the country/countries you plan to visit. For US citizens, the US Department of State website is a good source of information. The Country Information tab in the International Travel section provides details about passport validity, blank passport pages required, etc. For our other international clients, please be sure that you research your own country's travel requirements. It is each traveler's responsibility to ensure proper documentation.

*Important note: Beginning July 1, 2021, additional documentation from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa.
