The route follows towpaths along the Main–Danube Canal, as well as quiet country roads, farm tracks, and forest paths. Most sections are flat or gently undulating, though a few longer climbs add variety to the terrain. Surfaces range from paved asphalt to well-compacted gravel. With daily distances ranging from 19–34 miles (30–55 km), minimal traffic, and clearly marked cycle routes, this tour offers an easy to moderate level of difficulty.
Airport Info
For itineraries starting in Bamberg, the nearest airport is Nuremberg (NUE), about 37 mi. (60 km) away, with direct train service taking roughly one hour. Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) is also an option, approximately 137 mi. (220 km) from Bamberg, with trains taking 2.5 to 3 hours.
For tours beginning in Regensburg, convenient access is via Nuremberg Airport, located 65 mi. (105 km) away with a 1.5-hour train ride, or Munich International Airport (MUC), about 75 mi. (120 km) away with regular trains taking 1.5 to 2 hours.
Local Travel
In Bamberg, the dock is about a 10–15 minute taxi ride from the main train station, and local buses also connect the station, old town, and port. In Regensburg, the dock area can be reached in about 10 minutes by taxi from the main station.
Climate
Spring brings mild weather with highs between 55 and 65 °F (13–18 °C) and occasional showers. Summer is warm and sunny, averaging 70 to 85 °F (21–29 °C), with long daylight hours and occasional short storms. Autumn is mild and colorful, ranging from 55 to 70 °F (13–21 °C), offering clear days and harvest-season scenery. Layered clothing, a light jacket, and rain gear are recommended throughout all seasons.
