While cruising, your guide will walk you through the week ahead and share tips for cycling safely. Once docked, stretch your legs with an easy test ride, then enjoy dinner on board. Cycle past meadows and canals to Edam, once a busy port exporting its famous cheese around the world. Look for the old warehouses and weigh house that tell the town’s story. Continue riding through polder landscapes and past windmills to Hoorn, a vital base for the Dutch East India Company during the Golden Age, once so influential that Cape Horn was named after it. Back on board, cruise to Enkhuizen, another maritime hub known for its herring fleet and historic harbor, where you can wander cobblestone streets lined with 17th-century buildings. (B, L, D)Day 3: Enkhuizen - Oudeschild | Sailing day
Enjoy a day off the bike as you sail across the IJsselmeer, once the rough inland Zuiderzee that often flooded low-lying villages until it was closed off by the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Feel free to help the crew raise the sails, learn a few nautical knots, or relax on deck with a panoramic view of passing islands and flocks of waterfowl. By afternoon, you’ll dock in Oudeschild, Texel’s main harbor village. Dinner is on your own tonight. Try one of the island’s fish restaurants serving Texel lamb or local oysters. Choose a shorter or longer loop to discover Texel, the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands. This is a cyclist’s paradise where flat trails wind through dunes, sheep-dotted meadows, and coastal villages. Stop at Ecomare, where rescued seals and porpoises are cared for, or sample small-batch beer at a brewery made with local barley and dune water. In late afternoon, rejoin the ship and sail to Den Helder, home to the country’s main naval base for over two centuries. In spring, this flat polder land transforms into endless stripes of color with tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths stretching to the horizon. Pause for a stroll on the broad North Sea beach if the weather’s good. Cycle on through Bergen, a village with a long history of artists’ colonies, galleries, and dune mansions. Your day ends in Alkmaar, famous since 1365 for its cheese market, where cheese carriers still haul wheels by hand-drawn sledges as they did centuries ago. Wander the medieval streets, canals, and hidden courtyards before returning to your cozy cabin. (B, L, D)Day 6: Alkmaar - Zaandam, 29 mi. (47 km)
Today’s ride passes through small flower villages like Limmen and Egmond, with a stop at the Hortus Bulborum. The route finishes at Zaanse Schans, a remarkable open-air museum where working windmills still grind spices, saw wood, and press oil. Extra Info
Skill Level — Easy
This tour is an easy, guided, authentic sailing and biking experience. Your average daily distance will be approximately 23 miles. Holland is the ultimate cycling country as the entire country is crisscrossed with multiple National Cycling Routes, as well as local routes. During the days when two different options are possible, the group along with the tour leader will decide which route the entire group will cycle. Not all mentioned highlights will be visited during the short bike option. You can also choose to cycle self-guided with the help of a map and route notes (available onboard). If you prefer a day of rest, you can skip the bike tour and relax on board while cruising to the next town.
Airport Info
Fly to Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport (AMS).
Local Travel
The Amsterdam Schiphol train station is located directly below the airport. You may buy train tickets at the ticket kiosks. Additionally, customer service desks are situated close to the red and white checkered cube at Schiphol Plaza. Staff at the desk will also be able to provide you with train departure information and general information on traveling by train in Holland. For tours beginning in Amsterdam, from AMS airport, it is just a short train ride to Amsterdam Central Train Station, close to the center where the ship is moored. There is a direct train that leaves 6 times per hour from the airport to Amsterdam Central Station. It takes about 16 minutes.
Climate
The Dutch have a saying “April doet wat hij wil”. It means that April does whatever it wishes to do. Keep this in mind as you pack for your cycling holiday. Though cooler in April, the sun does shine on average 177 hours. Average high temperature is 55° F (12.8° C) and average low is 38° F (3.3° C). April is normally the driest month of the year but that does not mean it does not rain. Average rainfall is 1.8 inches (47 mm). Rain showers are common and frequent but not long. Plan to dress in layers!
Day of Rest
Any day may be designated a day of rest by remaining on board and enjoying the sailing experience. Certain days are set aside for excursion to Keukenhof and sailing. Please reference the detailed day to day itinerary.
Remarks
Due to the nature of a Bike and Sail tour, there is always a bit of adventure thrown into the mix. The planned daily sailing routes partially depend on the strength and direction of the winds. The skipper decides day by day the best route and discusses the options with everyone. The crew does whatever it can to run the program according to plan and to offer you a fascinating, varied, and active week, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is, however, possible that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the order of the program itself – may have to be adjusted. So, enjoy the ride and let yourself be led by the elements! Whenever possible, various passages will be undertaken fully rigged. Anyone who would like to help the crew sail and steer the boat is welcome to do so. Sailing experience is not necessary.
Important to know
Travel documents
Before you travel, please check the passport and visa requirements of the country/countries you plan to visit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have proper identification. For US citizens, the U.S. Passports & International Travel website is a good source of information. The Country Information tab provides details about passport validity, blank passport pages required, etc. It is important to research before you travel as airlines will not permit boarding if you do not have the required valid documents.
We recommend that you make copies of your important documents and papers (insurance cards, etc.). Leave a copy at home and have a copy with you. In the unfortunate situation that you lose your original documents, having copies facilitates the replacement process.
*Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa.
