Corsica, Isle of Beauty

France Bike Tours

Bike the wind swept Isle of Beauty

  • On this cycling trip, you will discover the wild and windswept Isle of Beauty, Corsica, and enjoy riding its beautiful coastline! Henry Matisse declared that here "all is color and all is light."

Corsica is a mountainous Mediterranean island, the fourth largest, with an incredibly varied geography. You will find dense forests, craggy peaks, and lovely beaches dotted with scenic villages and lovely hamlets.

The island has been part of France for more than 300 years but its cultural influences include Italy and North Africa. The cuisine is influenced not only by its history and culture but also by the geography of the island. Local specialties are sausage, cheese, and honey. Meat and fish are abundant in the diet and Corsican wine and olive oil are not to be dismissed, enriched by an incredible diversity in soil, climate, and windswept, granite, mountainsides.

We invite you to experience for yourself the beauty and light.

  • Travel

Most convenient arrival airport in terms of transfer logistics is Bastia Airport and for departure airport, Calvi.

    Local Travel

Airport transfer from Bastia to your first hotel is included in your tour price. Departure transfers are not included unless you have booked the luxury option and are departing from Calvi. Otherwise, there is a small supplement. See pricing. If departure is from Bastia, distance is 2 - 3 hours of driving and public transportation would not really be an option. See pricing for more information.

Please check local conditions before your arrival. A good website to use to research average high/low temperatures, average rainfall, and other weather related information is weatherbase.com

Day 1: Cape of Corsica
You will be welcomed at the airport in Bastia and transferred to Cape Corsica. Depending on your arrival time, you could take the rental bike on a test ride around the grounds and the surrounding area, consisting of beautiful stone villages and a small marina famous for its diving.  The restaurant nest to the hotel is a perfect place for dinner as it is one of the best in Cape Corsica.

Day 2:  Cape of Corsica - Centuri, 26 or 34 mi. (41 or 55 km) 560 or 860 m of elevation gain
This morning, you will go North, following the coastline, passing beautiful Genoese towers, crossing vineyards to reach the Maccinaggio port. To reach the Mattei windmill, you will have a climb but will then enjoy a beautiful descent to Centuri, renowned for being the first lobsters' fishing port in France.

Day 3: Centuri - Saint Florent, 36 mi. (58 km)
Leaving Centuri, you follow the road overlooking the sea. The views are amazing on this dramatic coast offering hidden and sheltered creeks ideal for swimming in the clear turquoise waters. Next,  Nonza with its Paoline tower and its black pebble beach is worth a stop. Later, you will cross Patrimonio, renowned for the best wine in Corsica. Its vineyards and beautiful church are a highlight. Wine tasting is offered in many of the cellars. The day's destination is Saint Florent, where you will stay for two nights.

Day 4: Saint Florent, 31 mi. (50 km)
Saint-Florent is a lovely little town with a small harbor and white sand beach. From here you can board a shuttle to one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, Saleccia.
You might also want to bike the suggested route of 50 km around the Nebbiu's villages.

Day 5: Saint Florent - Ile Rousse, 28, 48, or 53 mi. (45, 77 or 85 km) 600, 1260, or 1400 m of positive elevation
Today is an amazing ride across a protected coastal route with stunning landscapes. The road undulates in a luxurious granite and green environment, in spite of the arid climate. Once at the Vezzu pass, you will get beautiful views of the mountains.
A great descent will follow toward the Balagne area where different options are available to you. With a reasonable beach to the south at Plage de Rindara, and small rocky islands to the north, Ile-Rousse is in a perfect setting.

Day 6: Ile Rousse - Calvi, 16, 19, or 22 mi. (25, 31, or 35 km) 360, 490, or 650 m of positive elevation
You will cycle inland today to reach some of the most beautiful villages in Corsica, such as Pigna and Sant Antonino. In your roadbook, you will be given suggestions  to taste some fantastic local food in amazing places and restaurants (listed in your Europe Active road-book). You can also taste the local lime juice in Sant Antonino to kick you up the next hill! The artisans' road will then welcome you before the descent to Calvi, a little Saint Tropez in Corsica.
