A Brief History of Tulips in Holland
These days, ‘tulips’ and ‘the Netherlands’ are almost synonymous - picture Holland and you’re bound to imagine the pointy petals of the nation’s favorite flower. But where did tulips originally come from? Surprisingly, it wasn’t Holland!
Tulips were actually introduced to the Netherlands from the Ottoman Empire, specifically Turkey, where the flowers were named ‘tülbend’ due to their resemblance to head coverings. Thought to have actually been cultivated in Persia (now Iran) as early as the 10th century, tulips started being grown and admired in the gardens of the Ottoman Empire several hundred years later. So when did they reach Holland? Not until the 16th century, most experts guess, when a Flemish botanist named Carolus Clusius is thought to have brought these beautiful blooms to the Netherlands.
The unique beauty of the tulip captured the hearts and imagination of the Dutch, leading to a period in the 17th century dubbed ‘Tulip Mania’, when tulip bulbs were so valuable that they were traded for exorbitant sums, sometimes equating to the price of a house! This flowery phenomenon is considered to be one of the first recorded economic bubbles in history.
These days, it’s much more affordable to bag yourself some bulbs, but the allure of Holland’s tulip fields remains just as strong. Ready to catch your own case of Tulip Mania next spring?
