Overview
Discover the incredible beauty of New Zealand's Lake Dunstan trail on this thrilling e-bike and boat tour! Starting from the charming heritage town of Cromwell, you'll uncover the Otago region's gold mining history, early settler heritage, and stunningly scenic landscapes. Trace the path alongside the pristine waters of Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River, and the Clutha River before emerging into the historically rich town of Clyde. You'll then embark on a boat excursion along the very waterways your route paralleled, granting you unique perspectives on this region's magnificent scenery from both land and water.
Commence your day trip in the historic town of Cromwell. Your guide will meet you at one of the designated locations, set up your bike, and provide safety instructions. From here, pedal through the historic center, admiring the 19th-century architecture, before transitioning into the serene ambiance and glistening expanse of Lake Dunstan. Follow the trail as it winds along the lake's shoreline, crossing Bannockburn Bridge. Pause here to relish the verdant vistas over Bannockburn's vineyards before continuing past the vibrant vines.
After a brief ride, you'll reach Carrick Winery, where you can choose to dismount and enjoy a wine tasting experience. Alternatively, continue pedaling through landscapes adorned with vineyards and olive groves until you reach Cornish Point. Marvel at the shift in terrain as you navigate paths etched into rocky bluffs, offering panoramic vistas of the terrain below.
Pass by the monumental Cairnmuir Slide, a feat of terraced stone engineering designed to safeguard the Clyde Dam downstream from potential landslides. Continuing your ride, you'll arrive at Cairnmuir Gully, a tranquil expanse of still water where a floating cafe provides coffee and snacks for riders seeking a break.
Leverage the power of your e-bike as you ascend the Cairnmuir Ladder, allowing the bike to alleviate the strain of pedaling as you admire the meticulously constructed stone walls. At the summit, you'll be treated to awe-inspiring views across the valley and surrounding hills. Take a moment to absorb the unspoiled beauty of New Zealand's landscape before embarking on an invigorating downhill stretch that includes crossing the Hugo Suspension Bridge.
Ride along a portion of the trail close to lake level, experiencing thrilling switchbacks, skillfully crafted rock walls, and the historic Halfway Hut Viewpoint. Pause at this reconstructed Depression-era hut, once inhabited by a mining family striving to strike gold in Clyde's hills during the early 20th century. Today, it offers stunning vistas over the lake below.
Approaching the township of Clyde, you'll be greeted with impressive views of the Clyde Dam, a remarkable hydro-engineering feat constructed between the 1970s and 90s. Your guide will meet you in Clyde and transport you to the Dunstan Explorer, providing the final leg of your day tour: a boat voyage along Lake Dunstan. Delight in the reverse perspective of beholding the grand Dunstan Mountains from the teal waters of the lake, culminating in a truly unforgettable cycling adventure.
