Overview
Paris’s skyline is graced by the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, its 12th-century French Baroque architectural masterpiece. This terrific guided tour takes you on an intriguing journey around the incredible Ile de la Cite, from the outside of the exquisite Notre-Dame to the interior of the sensational Sainte-Chapelle and spine-tingling Conciergerie Prison, the final home of Queen Marie Antoinette before her bloody execution.
Starting out with a visit to the iconic Shakespeare & Company bookstore, you and your expert guide will make your way to the exceptional exterior of the Notre-Dame Cathedral for an overview of its complex history and sensational architecture. The cathedral is considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world, and is famed for its gorgeous rose windows, phenomenal flying buttress, and exceptional external detail.
Skip the line at the sensational Sainte-Chapelle and admire the awe-inspiring stained glass windows that make this resplendent chapel so famous. Opened in 1248, the chapel was part of the medieval Palais de la Cite, the former residence of the Kings of France. Its regal beauty is truly a sight to behold - with its golden Gothic arches and impressive 1,113 stained glass windows, the Sainte-Chapelle will blow you away!
The final stop on your insightful and intriguing adventure is the Conciergerie Prison, where former Queen of France Marie Antoinette spent her final days. This prison, built in a palace, exudes an eerie splendor that might just send a shiver down your spine - once a revolutionary court, this incredibly grand former palace took on a sinister role during the French Revolution, when militants killed over 1,300 prisoners and priests during the September Massacres.
On August 3rd 1792, Queen Marie Antoinette was arrested and taken into the dark depths of the Temple Prison before her transfer to a single-bed cell on the ground floor of the Conciergerie. This prison is where she spent her final lonely days, watched over by guards for two months before being sentenced to death in 1793. Marie Antoinette was taken from the Conciergerie to the Place de la Revolution (now the Place de la Concorde), where a bloodthirsty crowd eagerly awaited her shocking execution by guillotine.
Join your expert guide on an insightful, intriguing, and at times chilling tour of the phenomenal Ile de la Cite and discover several gems of Paris’ remarkable sightseeing roster.
