Overview
France’s military heritage is inestimably influential, shaping the face of modern Europe and producing one of the most legendary figures in history - Napoleon Bonaparte.
This fascinating tour provides a guided deep dive into France’s military history, exploring the stupendous golden-domed Invalides Museum and Cathedral, a baroque architectural masterpiece that delights the eyes even before visitors step inside its echoing galleries.
Inside the exceptional museum, your expert guide will lead you on a thorough and immersive journey through the exhibitions, telling the story of France’s role in military operations dating back centuries. The complex not only houses the tomb of Napoleon, but also contains an old hospital and even an old soldiers’ retirement home.
The highlight of your tour is a visit to the atmospheric tomb of Napoleon, former Emperor of France and arguably the most significant figure in France’s military history. Regarded as a military genius, Napoleon changed the political landscape of Europe forever with his crusades, Napoleonic Code, and Napoleonic Wars. His downfall occurred during the latter, when a series of critical losses eventually forced the former Emperor into exile on the remote island of St. Helena, his home until his death in 1821. The creation of the crypt to house Napoleon’s sarcophagus took twenty years to complete, so it’s a sight to behold!
