This bike and boat tour along the Danube River has proven year after year to be one of our most popular tours. The Austrian and Hungarian alluvial landscape and the Danube River Bend is a region of varied natural beauty and is chock full of art, culture, and history.
Offered on different vessels, each with its own unique itinerary, there is something for everyone.
As you cycle the famous Danube Cycle Path from Passau, you pass through four countries and visit enchanting European capitals and villages featuring Vienna, city of music; Budapest, the Hungarian "Danube Queen"; and Bratislava, the "beauty" on the Danube.

Itinerary
Important Information:
In case of flood or low tide, the operators reserve the right to modify the itinerary and bridge parts of the passages with busses if necessary or to cancel the journey on short notice as the safety of the passengers and crew is paramount.
No legal right shall be constituted in these situations. (Water level is force majeure). The same applies for locally mandated (but not previously announced) repair work on locks or bridges as well as unexpected and unfortunate mechanical issues of the ships' engines or power unit.
Please be aware that these ships, like all ships, are not just floating hotels, but machines, with perceptible engine noises. The ships along the Danube do navigate at night to traverse the distances necessary. If you are sensitive to noise, please bring your earplugs.

Day 1: Arrival in Passau at 4 pm

Boarding begins at 4 PM! A welcome snack is offered as you arrive. At approximately 6:30 pm, the boat will depart Passau and navigate to Schlogen.Day 2: Schlögen - Linz, 35 mi. (56 km)
The distribution of rental bicycles will occur in the morning. Your cycling will begin from the UNESCO heritage site, ‘Schlogener Schlinge’, through the uninhabited Kaiserau valley, to the Aschach baroque market, and to Linz via Ottensheim.Day 3: Tulln - Vienna, 19 or 31 mi. (31 or 49 km)
A visit to the Museum of Egon Schiele and garden exhibition (with 65 gardens) in Tulln is on the agenda, followed by a cycle tour from Tulln with a beautiful view of the foothills of the Viennese Wood (Wiener Wald), past Klosterneuburg (monastery – Austrian Escorial) to Vienna. Individual sightseeing in Vienna or if you prefer, a city tour by bike, 95 % of which will take place on a dedicated bike path! More information will be provided onboard. After dinner, at 8:30, a guided bus tour “Vienna by night” is optional.Day 4: Visegrád - Szentendre - Budapest, 37 mi. (59 km)
You cycle on the Eurovelo 6 through the Danube Bend on car-free cycle paths past Visegrád to Vác and then by ferry to Tahitötfol and Szentendre island.
You can go by train (approx. every hour) to Budapest or continue by bike for another 22 km.Day 5: Sightseeing in Budapest/biking to Margarete’s island 14 mi. (22 km)
You may enjoy a city tour by bus in the morning, leaving directly from the boat landing station. The tour will take about 3 hours. From here, you will be transferred back to the ship. In the afternoon, there is a possibility for a round-trip tour by bike on the, car-free Margareten Island in Budapest.Day 6: Sightseeing in Bratislava and cycling Bratislava - Devin - Bratislava, 22 or 27 mi. (36 or 44 km)
Optional this morning is a guided city tour through the historical center of Bratislava. Afterward, on the Danube cycling route, you via pedal via Wolfsthal to Hainburg and to the Schloss Eckartsau (castle). Back on the same way or to Schloss (castle) Hof and Devín (approx. 6 km busy secondary road). Devin is Slovakia's national memorial with beautiful views.Day 7: Cycling tour Krems to Marbach, 33 mi. (53 km)
Leaving the UNESCO World Heritage City Krems, you will soon arrive in one of the most famous places in the Wachau: Dürnstein. Continue cycling to Weißenkirchen and Spitz. From afar, you will see the impressive monastery Melk. Continue to Marbach where the MS Primadonna is already waiting for you.Day 8: Departure from Passau at 9 am
You will arrive in Passau at approximately 9 am and depart after breakfast. At 10 am, a bus transfer to public parking or the central train station is available.*All distances are approximate. Boarding time between 4 and 5 pm. Located at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers, Passau has numerous of interesting sites to visit. Use your free time and stroll through the cobblestoned old town center, listen to the bells of Passau’s Gothic Town Hall or have a look at the world’s largest Catholic Church organ in the Passau Cathedral. Your first day’s cycling begins with a ride through the classic scenery of the ‘Great Loop’ Donauschlinge - one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube. Along the way you will encounter tiny villages and cozy cider taverns. In Austria’s only Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell you can taste their delicious liquors and cheese. The famous ‘Schlogener View’ provides a wonderful panorama of the surrounding Austrian countryside. The boat welcomes all cyclists back on board in the charming market town of Aschach.Day 3: Devin - Bratislava, 28 mi. (45 km)
You pedal along the former ‘Iron Curtain’, cross the green line and reach the imposing Imperial Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens. Follow the bike path through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ to the coronation city of Bratislava and the slopes of the little Carpathians and discover the hidden alleyways and sights of Bratislava on an optional city tour.Day 4: Budapest (day of rest) - Excursion to Szentendre, 28 mi. (45 km)
The entrance to Budapest, Hungary’s capital is stunning. Savour the beauty of Budapest during a coach tour or a guided bike tour (optional) to discover many of the highlights of this handsome city. You can also choose to cycle to the charming town of Szentendre with its Mediterranean atmosphere and lively art scene. You will get a very close experience of Hungarian culture at an evening show with traditional music and dance (optional).Day 5: Danube bend - Esztergom, 31 mi. (50 km)
The wooded hills of Pilis, Visegrád and Börzsöny together with the meandering Danube create a wonderful landscape that has become a nature lover’s paradise. Situated in the middle of the Danube River the idyllic isle of Szentendre exudes silent Puszta romance. You cycle via the baroque village of Vác (influenced by the architects of Austria’s empress Maria Theresia) to the bishop town of Esztergom with its gorgeous basilica – Hungary’s largest Catholic Church.Day 6: Vienna (day of rest)
Discover Vienna’s most beautiful attractions. During a city tour by bike or bus (optional) you will experience Vienna’s most famous examples of architecture: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephens Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and, of course, the colorful "Hundertwasserhaus". Take time to relax in one or more of Vienna’s famous cafés, while the evening ends impressively at a classical concert (optional) in one of Vienna‘s most famous palaces.Day 7: Wachau | Krems - Melk/Pöchlarn, 23 to 28 mi. (37 to 45 km)
Your last biking day is a special highlight! A powerful ruin looms above the small Baroque town of Durnstein, while the blue spire of the monastery church is a landmark of the renowned Wachau. Amidst dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards and castles, this hilly landscape enchants everybody who visits ... you will be biking on cloud nine! In Spitz (possibility to do a wine-tasting – optional) you will find comfortable wine taverns along the bike path. After the Captain’s farewell dinner, lots of fun and entertainment can be experienced during the popular crew show.Day 8: Passau

Individual arrival in the "Three River City". Passau attracts many with the world's greatest church organ at the Stephansdom and it’s charming Old Town. Embarkation will be at 4:00 pm and departure around 7 pm.Day 2: Engelhartszell - Great Loop - Brandstatt 27-29 mi. (44-47 km)
The day starts in Engelhartszell with the only Trappist monastery in Austria, towards the "Great Loop" - one of the most beautiful regions of the Danube. The route leads through small villages with typical taverns. and you board again in Untermühl. This ship will navigate during the night to Bratislava.Day 3: Bratislava, 34 mi. (54 km)
Arrival in Bratislava at approximately 9 am. You start cycling from here via Hainburg to the imposing Imperial Palace of Hof beautifully terraced gardens and idyllic manor farm further on to Devin and then back to Bratislava.
Day 4: Budapest - Szentendre - Budapest, 30 mi. (48 km) or Day of rest
In the early morning, you enjoy the panoramic view of the Danube's gorgeous landscape on the Sundeck. The gateway to Budapest is overwhelming, as many of the famous tourist features are situated directly next to the river bank. In the afternoon you can explore the numerous attractions of the city. Nearby, you find the Margaretheninsel which is outstandingly qualified for a small bike tour or the charming town of Szentendre with a Mediterranean atmosphere and lively art life. In the night shipping to Visegrad.Day 5: Danube Bend | Visegrad - Esztergom, 16 - 37 mi. (25 - 60 km)
The Danube bend is definitely one of the most delightful and attractive parts and is called the Hungarian Wachau. Today's bike leg starts at Visegrad with its famous fortress and the ruins of the former palace. You can choose from 2 different routes: the longer one includes a side trip to the island of Szentendre and the baroque village of Vác, which has been influenced by the architects of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresia. The other route leads you directly to the bishop-town of Esztergom, with its gorgeous basilica, Hungary's largest Catholic Church, overlooking the village. In the night shipping to Vienna. (*60 km-tour is designed for strong cyclists only).Day 6: Vienna - Nussdorf (Korneuburg may also be possible) - Day of rest
You should be sure to see the most famous places of interest like the St. Stephens Cathedral (Stephansdom), the Hofburg, the gorgeous boulevard with the Burgtheater, the State Opera House or the town hall that takes you

Take the last sight at the Schlögener Schlinge ("Great Loop") before you arrive relaxed at Passau. Arrival is at approximately 10 AM, disembarkation is at 10:30 AM. Begin your journey in the charming riverside town of Engelhartszell, located approximately 30 km (19 miles) from Passau. Known for its scenic beauty and Austria’s only Trappist monastery, it’s the perfect introduction to your Danube adventure. Embarkation begins around 4:00 pm. Enjoy your first evening on board and overnight stay in Engelhartszell.Day 2: Engelhartszell – Great Loop – Aschach – Vienna-Nussdorf, approx. 40 – 43 km
Start your day with a peaceful ride along one of the most scenic sections of the Danube—the famous Schlögener Schlinge, or “Great Loop.” Pedal through quaint villages and stop at cozy taverns along the way. You'll rejoin the ship in Aschach and sail through the evening toward Vienna-Nussdorf.Day 3: Vienna-Nussdorf (Day of Rest)
Spend the day exploring Austria’s imperial capital. Highlights include St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg Palace, the elegant Ringstraße boulevard, the State Opera House, and the historic Town Hall. In the evening, the ship departs for Budapest.Day 4: Budapest (Day of Rest or Optional Roundtrip to Szentendre, approx. 47 km)
Enjoy a stunning morning approach into Budapest from the sundeck, with many of the city’s landmarks lining the riverbanks. Spend the day exploring this vibrant city or opt for a scenic bike ride to the charming town of Szentendre—known for its Mediterranean flair, art galleries, and riverside cafés. In the evening, continue sailing to Visegrád.Day 5: Danube Bend | Visegrád – Vác – Visegrád, approx. 36 km
This stretch of the river, often referred to as the “Hungarian Wachau,” offers breathtaking scenery. Begin your ride in Visegrád, home to a historic fortress and palace ruins. Cycle through the countryside and cross the Szentendre Peninsula to reach the baroque town of Vác, rich in Habsburg-era architecture. Ride back to Visegrád through charming Hungarian villages. In the afternoon, cruise on to Bratislava.Day 6: Bratislava (Day of Rest)
Arrive in Bratislava, Slovakia’s lively capital. Explore the old town by foot or hop on a mini train for a panoramic tour including Bratislava Castle. Alternatively, join an optional guided bike tour along the Danube and into the city’s scenic surroundings. In the evening, the ship sets sail for Rossatz or Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley.Day 7: Wachau – Melk – Pöchlarn, approx. 40 – 50 km | Cruise to Engelhartszell
Your final day of cycling leads through the romantic Wachau Valley, dotted with vineyards, apricot orchards, castles, and abbeys. Don’t miss the iconic blue tower of Dürnstein’s monastery church or the grand Benedictine Abbey in Melk. Reboard the ship in Pöchlarn. In the evening, enjoy a festive farewell gala dinner as you cruise back to Engelhartszell.Day 8: Departure from Engelhartszell
Relax on deck as the sun rises over the Danube Valley. Take in final views of the Schlögener Schlinge before arriving back in Engelhartszell around 9:00 am. Disembarkation follows at approximately 9:30 am. Skill Level — Easy
This is a relatively easy tour following the flow of the Danube River. The route is mostly flat with some rolling hills, especially coming out of the Danube valley. It takes place on good, asphalt bike paths and is a tour that is very suitable for beginners and children. As in all of our bike tours, a good command of the bicycle is required, including good balance, ability to stop and start quickly, and comfort in riding in a group.

We recommend that you fly into Munich Airport (MUC).
Local Travel
Munich Airport (MUC) is well connected to the city center and beyond by public transportation, taxis, and transfer services.
Public transportation:To access a train to Passau, your point of embarkation, you first take a bus to Freising train station (approximately €3). It’s also possible to take a taxi from the airport to Freising Station (approximately €27). From Freising, continue by train to Passau. The train ride is approx. 2–2½ hr. (depending on connections) and costs €30 to €45 depending on type of train.
If you are arriving by car, just ask! We can provide parking details. If your travel plans include spending some time in Munich before your bike and boat tour, you can access a train to Munich city center directly at the airport at either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.Private transfers:

Please be aware you will be part of an international group of people, but your tour guide and crew members are multilingual.

Documents
Before you travel, please check the passport and visa requirements of the country/countries you plan to visit. For US citizens, the US Department of State website is a good source of information. The Country Information tab in the International Travel section provides details about passport validity, blank passport pages required, etc. For our other international clients, please be sure that you research your own country's travel requirements. It is each traveler's responsibility to ensure proper documentation.
*Important note: Please check on the status of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa.
Life on Board
The ships used on this tour have an on-board tour director that does not cycle with the group. The tours are generally designed for self-guided cycling. The multi-lingual director on board is available in case of a breakdown or emergency. On certain dates aboard the Swiss Crown, Fortuna, and Vivienne a fully guided package is available for a supplement. See dates/pricing.

This is an excellent bike and barge. The Vivienne was a beautiful boat with excellent staff. The schedule is well laid out, allowed time to enjoy the biking and scenery. The navigation app worked really well but take a phone holder for your bike so you can see the map. I have Bluetooth hearing aids so the directions were also provided by audio which was very helpful. That city bus tours were ok, if you are a city traveller you could have navigated both Budapest and Vienna on your own.
The cruise director has lots of information and will answer your questions…. If in doubt ask questions.

The caring staff, beautiful countryside and incredible sights made this bucket list trip awesome! The crew felt like family by the end of the trip and the biking was really fun rain or shine!

- The biking difficultly was as expected. Im 60 and rented an ebike. I rode with and without pedal assist depending on the terrain and energy level. The marked bike paths were scenic and easy to follow. The navigation was sometimes trcky when a bike path ended or there was a detour.

Our group truly enjoyed the week on the Vivienne. The bike trails were well maintained and routes well marked which enabled us to enjoy the amazing scenery each day. The staff on Vivienne was incredible.
Two complaints were the e-bikes were very heavy

This was truly the best trip I’ve had in a long time! Everything about it was fantastic from the incredible sites We visited to the breathtaking biking routes. Every day was amazing. The experience on the boat was unforgettable, with outstanding staff, delicious food, and excellent service. Leslie, our cruise Director was absolutely top-notch. He was informative, funny and always ready to answer questions. Honestly, it’s hard to pick just one highlight because the entire trip was so special. I’ll definitely be recommending this adventure to all of my biking friends!

The bikes were great. The crew took care of everything, answered any questions we had and provided insight to suggested stops along the way. Tripsite tour representative Kirsten went above and beyond to answer all our pre-trip questions. The routes were very picturesque, provided ample opportunity to explore the countryside and learn about the local cultures. The food was great and great suggestion to bring a container for lunch. We will definitely book again!

The bike riding, the staff, the food and the new friends we met during the week were all amazing. The last ride from Krems to Melk was absolutely breathtaking! I literally cannot stop smiling!

This tour exceeded my expectations. I loved the variety of biking along the Danube River and through vineyards and beautiful small towns, and free days to explore some larger cities by foot, bike or bus. Having one home base was perfect & our cabin was very comfortable.
I recommend that you view the trip as a sampling of the beautiful areas and not expect that you will be able to thoroughly tour many of the landmarks.
